On the Eve of the Uprising and Other Stories from Colonial Korea (Cornell East Asia Studies)From Cornell East Asia Series

Collected here are translations into English of six classic stories from colonial Korea (1910-1945) as well as the time of liberation (1945-1948). Each piece takes a different perspective on a defining process in Korean history--the colonization and modernization under Japanese rule. The volume demonstrates the rich variety of registers, settings, styles, and thematic concerns that characterized the literary production of early modern Korea. The editor's introduction places the collection in the context of modern Korean literary history, and short biographies precede each story. In its judicious selection of classic texts, On the Eve of the Uprising and Other Stories from Colonial Korea offers an unprecedented opportunity to explore the intellectual complexity and artistic richness of colonial Korean literature.

Good reference & Interesting for east asian majors or Korean majors

You need a certain amount of knowledge into Koreanness as well as knowledge on Korean culture and language nuances to understand the text. Otherwise, like the people below commenting, you will not get it. Still good reference work and useful for its translation making the book available to english readers.

oppressed society
By W Boudville
For readers in English, who do not know Korean, the collection of short stories in this book can help give flesh to the experience of Koreans under Japanese subjugation during the 20th century. The basic problem is that Korean is simply known to too few people.

The stories evoke many difficulties endured over decades of forced assimilation by foreign overlords. Very little of this was known to people outside Korea at the time. Mostly because to Americans and Europeans, it was all just a backward land. The stories also give some insight into the level of development of Korea. Vastly different from the world class society of today. But maybe the sheer backwards of Korea depicted in the stories helps to explain the intense drive in recent decades to catch up with other nations, especially Japan, and to put that past firmly behind.

I cannot say that I found the stories inherently gripping reading, like a comfortable novel. Instead, they were best regarded as offering the above insights into a now vanished society.

Colonial and immediate post-colonial fiction for the afficianado only
By Charles C. Montgomery
EVE OF THE REVOLUTION AND OTHER STORIES FROM COLONIAL KOREA collects six stories from the colonial era (1910-45, when Korea was under the Japanese boot) and the immediate post-liberation era. It begins with a great introduction by the editor, which helps build context for the book as a whole, and each story is introduced by a brief biography of the author.

One thing that is certainly interesting about this book is that three of its authors Park Tae-won, Kim Namcheon and Yi Tae-jun actually returned to the North during the liberation era. For this reason, their stories were not published in Korea until the last few decades. The stories in the book (not listed by the publisher here) are:

Yom SangSop's "On the Eve of the Uprising." Yom is the same guy who wrote the epically long THREE GENERATIONS. "Uprising" was strongly influenced by Japanese writing style (first person, confessional) of the time. The narrator is a rather selfish man named Inwha, a Korean studying in Japan. He has adopted a philosophy of self-reliance that is actually more like a philosophy of use everyone around you. At the same time he suffers from constant racial discrimination, both in Japan and at home. When he hears that his wife is dying (he was married quite young and she got ill during childbirth, which occurred while he is in Japan. Inwha is also a bit of a misogynist, and women might not enjoy reading his treatment of them, particularly his dying wife.

"Escape," by Ch'oe Seohae is a much briefer piece, an epistolary story set in the Korean diaspora in Mongolia. This story covers traditional themes of economic and social injustice leading to freedom fighting.

"Samnyong the Mute" is by Na Tohyang, who died tragically early at the age of 24 of tuberculosis - just about the same age and from the same disease that Yi Sang (you will later note this is a case of subtle foreshadowing!) died of. It is a story of unrequited love and class schisms, and has a rather odd ending.

"A Day in the Life of Kubo the Novelist," by Pak Tae-won is much more modern. As the title suggests it is one day of Kubo's life, recorded by order of events, and told in a very modern stream of consciousness way interspersed with similarly stream of consciousness forays into memory. As an added bonus, this story is also illustrated, and by another very famous Korean writer - none other than Yi Sang, the famous author of Nalgae, or WINGS.

The last two stories were of the least interest to me, and I suspect to any casual reader, being philosophical and dryly historical in order.

"Barley," by Kim Nam'chon is a story that attempts to discuss issues of philosophy, primarily Western versus Eastern versions. There are some interesting discussions, but this is definitely one of the more dated pieces in the collection, when it spends a lot of time arguing that westerners who visit Korea see it's "westerness" as inferior copies of the west - an argument that should have largely been buried by the miracle on the Han.

The last story is "Before and After Liberation" by Yi Taejun. It begins just near the end of WWII as Korean are still being conscripted into the Japanese army, but the likelihood of Japanese collapse seems likely. It ends after liberation with Yi attempting to describe all the writer's groups and counter-groups that formed just after colonialism ended, and all the political winds blowing in Seoul. It really turns into a history lesson here, and not so much of a story

If you want a peek into Korean colonial history, and aren't afraid of work that is a little bit dated, this is a good book. Or, if you are a fan of Korean literature and history in general, this would be a good book. But if you are reading for pleasure or entertainment, the didactic nature of these stories might not be quite right.
