Good textbook, bad audio supplement

This CD is meant to accompany a Bulgarian textbook. While I like the textbook a lot, this CD is much less helpful than a variety of other resources I have found. Essentially the only thing on the CD is a reading of the dialogues in the textbook. In general, this sounds like it would be useful. However, the dialogues are read by native speakers who do not slow down their speech for the recording. There are no translations with the dialogues, and none of the vocabulary is repeated or slowed down at all.

If you are looking for a good pronunciation guide to accompany a textbook, don't buy this item. For the cost of this CD, you can subscribe to a number of online Bulgarian-learning resources that will provide much more benefit.

I still recommend the textbook that this CD is sold with. The textbook itself is a good grammar reference. However, this CD is much less helpful than I expected, even when used with the textbook.

Intensive is the applicable word for the textbook. 3 1/2 years later and still on chapter 9. I do not listen to the CD enough. It has normal speech for a variety of age groups. After working on the chapter I can follow the speech patterns.

14 months, 170 workouts, and 30 lbs later...

Fourteen months ago, my size 12 blue jeans were starting to feel just a little bit more than tight. I had just seen the pictures of myself at my sister's wedding...and they weren't pretty. They made me realize that I had gone from always having been extremely slender to well, to put it politely, junoesque.
I started this program March 4, 1999, after reading an excerpt from Strong Women Stay Slim in the Reader's Digest. I was looking for a program that I could do for the rest of my life. It had to be one that did not involve going to a gym, since I have a 100% failure rate with exercise dependent on a gym. It had to be one that helped me drop the 30 lbs. I had picked up since taking a sedentary job in the suburbs. It had to be forgiving of my sometimes irregular schedule. It had to get me back in shape for my 25th high school reunion.
After six weeks of following the exercises in the Reader's Digest Article, I was already seeing results, so I bought Strong Women Stay Young, and added the ankle weight and abs exercises from the book to my program. I also started taking the stairs at work instead of the elevator, and walking to the store instead of driving. (I did do the program an average of three times a week, rather than the recommended two.)
By the time my high school reunion rolled around, I had dropped the extra 30 lbs (without dieting -- just sensible eating). So many people at work have commented in the change in my appearance and have asked how I did it, that I've taken to carrying Reader's Digest reprints of the original article around to hand out when asked. My thighs and my upper arms have slimmed down and firmed up. My belt went from too tight on the largest hole to too loose on the smallest. I continue to get stronger and to improve my sense of balance. And my jeans are now a size six...
Some of the other reviews raise concerns that this program is too mild to be effective. Perhaps that's true, if you're looking for serious bodybuilding, or want to train for a marathon. But as for me, I wanted to be stronger and slimmer. I am. I wanted a program that I would actually do, instead of one that I would drift away from. Fourteen months later, I'm still working out. My experience is that this works, if you actually do it.

A Wonderful Book

After 18 years of increasing disability with CFIDS/Fibromyalgia and a brain injury in 1997, I was a mess.
A friend sent me a copy of this in 1998, and it helped turn my life around.
I went from being so weak I was barely able to do one set of 8 reps (with NO weights), to outgrowing first 3 lb, then 5 lb, then 10 lb hand and ankle weights.
Despite the unpredictable and cyclic nature of my illness, I'm able to keep up my strength when I'm doing well, and rebuild it quickly and easily after relapses.
I've recommended this book to family, friends, and even one of my doctors, and have yet to find anyone who didn't benefit from it.

A Gift for yourself and anywoman of any age

This well researched book explains how to do something reallypositive for your body no matter what your age. I love that this canbe done at home with a minimum of investment in equipment. (hand weights and adjustable ankle weights) The program is designed to make the most of your time, so two forty minute workouts a week is all it takes to make you strong, increase your balance and increase bone density. This is a book I've recommneded to my mom, and all my friends, no matter how old and how young. Note that this is a starting off point for weight training. If you already do it on a regular basis the exercises may not excite you but the research behind it is interesting.

Excellent reference book on tai-chi

Mantak Chia has always been comprehensive in presenting his materials in a clear and logical way. It is one the best reference book for practitioners of tai-chi.

Tai-chi has become the no. 1 Chinese martial art system that has re-invented itself into a complete mind-body exercise system with the largest number of practitioners. One won't go far off if one simply practices one style of tai-chi form, and imitates the graceful movement of his sifu (if not enough, one can always go to youtube and learn and imitate the graceful movements of other sifu's). Since the mind of the practitioner is focused on the gracefulness of the form, possible psychological side effect can be avoided (like chi-kung/deep-meditation/kundalini syndromes) That is the wonderful part, and the reason for its popularity.

Having said that, a practitioner certainly can improve faster through following good guidelines like many in this book, for example:

1. Structural alignment: Tai-chi is usually practiced as a flowing circular movement system, which is essential for unimpeded chi-movement for system strengthening. Structure alignment of each position might easily be neglected by a beginning practitioner. Matak Chia advised "holding the (each) position" for up to five minutes. This is actually an important classical approach, often neglected by many contemporary "eager-to-progress" practitioners (or sifu's too!). In some Wu-style, there is a middle-way approach, in that a junior practitioner has to practice a square form first, which essential is a direct/straight-line movement between each position with holding for a few seconds.

2. Power training: the wonder of the tai-chi conditioning system is that power training can be done after graceful form training of structural alignment. Mantak Chia has offered some good training technique such as spiral, knee-twisting and rooting. (Of course, a tai-chi practitioner can also pick up other power training technique from other styles: like the very simple and effective method of fighting-style zhan zhuang of the I-style founded by grandmaster Wang).

3. Training for martial art: most practitioners for tai-chi do not come to tai-chi for its martial art aspect. Mantak Chia has presented a good introduction of how tai-chi practitioners can use the eight tai-chi forces, but more for information than for actual training. These are actually pre-combat training methods only. Tai-chi practitioners fighting in the ring will punch, evade, and kick like any stand-up fighter (one can browse the web and watch Wu-style master Mr. Wu fought in the ring with a famous White-crane master in Macao back in the 50's). For various reasons, some contemporary tai-chi masters (Mantak Chia NOT included) like to mystify tai-chi fighting power using fa-jing demonstrations (like throwing people up through simple touching) or even knocking people down through no contact distant chi power!

One caveat for folks who are ONLY interested to learn tai-chi from Mantak Chia's book: one can do without his other "promotions" (like healing love or chi-weight-lifting) to gain maximum benefits from one's tai-chi practice.

Another Gem from Mantak Chia

Over the last 25 years of so, my students and I have derived a great deal from a careful study of Mantak Chia's written works, and have had the great good fortune to work with several of his senior students.

Not only do most of his methods work very well, but much of his material has not been published elsewhere, except in some works in Chinese. I learned a few of the same exercises while studying in China and I was told that they came from oral traditions. That tends to give more credence to Mantak Chia's teachings. For example, one of the things that he emphasizes is the use of spiral "energy," that is not much mentioned in many books on Tai Chi and Qigong.

Tai chi was developed as both a martial art and a way to cultivate the physical body, subtle systems and spirit. People are often incredulous when they see the slow movements and hear that it is the basis of a martial art. But I have seen experts do some quite extraordinary things with Tai Chi: the key is the development and retention of internal "energy." I put quotes around the word energy, because it isn't really an accurate translation of the word "qi." Which is better translated as "influence." I have commented elsewhere that it's a bit of a misnomer to talk about "energy." This is not a semantic point, but rather something that can be very helpful in practice, particularly when using tai Chi for health and healing.

I prefer to use the term subtle "systems," to be a little more precise than saying "energies," for these subtle systems are composed of the inseparable twins:
1. Subtle energies and
2. The subtle fields that carry them.
Without energy the fields could not actualize, and without the fields, there would be nothing to carry the energy.

This book is full of excellent examples of how to stimulate and strengthen these subtle systems. Some other meditative practices, like kundalini, are not good at retaining the forces that you generate with these practices. Mantak Chia once said that kundalini yoga was a great way to heat a room!

There is a limit to how far you can go in Tai Chi and Qigong without a teacher, but this book will take you much further than most, and if you are already engaged in either type of practice, the book will give you a lot of helpful pointers.

Very Helpful instruction

I've only been practicing for a couple of years so my comments come from the perspective of a relative beginner. I find this book to be an excellent supplement to my teacher's instruction. The detailed descriptions of the 13 movement form are extremely helpful, particularly the explanations detailing the focus of spiraling energy in each movement, instead of focusing on what a given posture looks like when it's complete, he describes the process of achieving the posture. (not sure I've adequately described it).

I enjoy the practical approach to his writing style, easy to read but alot of information to absorb. Very accessible to a student at my level.

Stunning - RIP Michael Herr

A friend posted today that Michael Herr just died. The link said that he went through years of depression after returning from Vietnam, and after reading the book the only surprise would be if he hadn't. He reported for Esquire during the most intense year of the war, from late 1967 through the Tet Offensive. His level of sensitivity and perception must have heightened an experience that would have been brutal for anyone, but we the readers reap the rewards. This isn't history, it's a 262 page stream of consciousness prose poem from an artist who uses words as his medium. If you have any sense of the era it will snap you back in time; you'll feel the feral heat and humidity in the middle of winter, and hear rotor blades on a silent afternoon. Like his contemporaries the Beatles, Michael Herr lived to 76 knowing his legacy was set in stone by his early 30s; I hope he could accept that, because it's an extraordinary legacy, indeed. He assisted Coppola with Apocalypse Now and Kubrick with Full Metal Jacket; fans of those movies should read Dispatches to get the unvarnished source material, more in feel than in actual events.

I first read Dispatches in the late 70s and I've gone through several copies and 8 or 10 readings in the intervening years. I finally got a clue and bought the book on Kindle today so I don't have to go looking for it or buy yet another copy when I feel the urge to read this prose that can still give me chills almost four decades after I first found it.

Still shaking my head

After reading "Sand in the Wind" "Fields of Fire" and 20 other books and being a Marine Corps Grunt I thought I knew Vietnam...Until I went there in 2013. I travelled the length of the country, went to Hue, Da'Nang, the Khe Sanh and many of the places written about in this book. A collection of hundreds of short stories, "dispatches" sent to news organizations or observations of Michael Herr's time in Nam.' After visiting, reading more I understand it...but I still shake my head at the Washington policy makers, The military/Industrial Complex that sent us there...anyone with a tiny bit of history and looked at the terrain knew this war was not winnable-unless the USA invaded the north and killed people wholesale. This book goes a long way into seeing and understanding what was really going on.

Sometimes painful, always relevant

Herr was in Vietnam as an Esquire correspondent for two years, a period that included the Tet offensive in 1968. He notes that almost 700 such writers were accredited to the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV) during Tet.
The “grunts” tolerated correspondents on an individual basis but when they showed up in a grouping of five or six, for example, the troops got pretty nervous and worried that something bad was about to happen. The usual question he got was, ”What the hell are you doing here, man?” Herr’s stoic reaction — he had a job to do, just like them.
Herr writes movingly about the siege of Khe Sanh and the combat at Hue, how it changed the men who survived the seemingly endless days and nights trying to stay alive with little sleep. Occasionally he reports examples of Marines’ dark humor. The joke went, “You load all the Friendlies onto ships and take them out to the South China Sea. Then you bomb the country flat and then you sink all the ships.”
The enemy wasn’t always the Viet Cong (VC). One afternoon at Khe Sanh a Marine opened the door of a latrine and was killed by a grenade that had been rigged on the door. Something like that happened in my outfit when an unexploded grenade was discovered in the executive officer’s jeep gas tank. Another facet of the war was its cruelty and thirst for revenge. A Belgian told of an American who loaded up twenty-some VC dead bodies in a helicopter sling and dropped them in the center of a hostile village. “Ah, psywar,” said the Belgian, kissing his fingertips.
Herr was skeptical of pronouncements by the colonels and generals who claimed that things were getting better, we’re turning the corner, and other optimistic propaganda. Perhaps the truest view was that of a battalion S-2 (intelligence officer) who once covered his papers with a sheet where he had written — What does it all mean?
Herr’s book was published several years after his return to The World. He doesn’t offer any conclusions about the war and pretty much leaves it up to the reader. But looking back almost fifty years with 20/20 vision one has to wonder if it was worth the 58,315 Americans killed in action.

The final hardware implemented, is tested with well-defined and well-analyzed configurations and the hardware behaves in concurrence with its simulated counterparts and in accordance with the differential equation guiding the underlying Neuromorhic logic (I.E. of a Continuous Time Recurrent Network (CTRNN)).The neurons and supporting devices are all constructed from commonly available off-the-shelf components and the implementation has been tested to insure a high degree of fidelity between behavior predicted by CTRNN state equations and the correspondingly programmed computer. In addition, it is demonstrated that the constructed device is easy to use and can be employed in a wide variety of research efforts without the need to develop sophisticated electrical engineering knowledge.

This is a super practical book of helpful ways to enjoy your kids and actually have an enjoyable relationship with them. You read a page, and you go take it and try it right now--it's that simple and applicable. Readable, helpful, and empowering to parents without getting deep and psychological. Take one tip per day and this is a huge help to connecting with the kids.

It's clear that the author is a caring dad who is writing from experience and has taken time to learn how to engage with his kids. If kids know how to interact with you in a way that you want, it increases the quality of life for both parent and child. This book is a great guide to being a good parent with great kids, to help you figure out how to spend time in ways that matter, even if you do have a busy life, even if you do live on a budget. If you need help, just pick up this book and give it 5 minutes at a time--and you'll be pleased that you did. Every one of the 101 tips is helpful and I endorse them wholeheartedly.

What a great book! As a parent of two boys I am always in need of fun ideas to motivate them and to help them learn life lessons. This contains what I was looking for - helpful tips and ideas without the author forcing their experiences on me. These ideas provide a foundation of interactions with my children that WE can build on to help me them learn the values I want them to have. Great reference for those rainy days where I need a little inspiration.

    Great Resource!

    I purchased the iBook version to help me set up my virtual assistant business. While Helen is in the UK and some of her tips/references are specific to that country, I just correlate them back to U.S. terms. All of her tips are valuable and easy to understand. It was a great starting point to setting up the business, and she really goes into the step by step details. The book is easy to read and follow and it felt as though she was speaking directly to me. Looking forward to reading Helen's other books.

Most VA business's you see online are scams to sell you a website that never results in job opportunities.
