I am missing like half of the figures and graphs in each chapter. There is some sort of glitch with the digital copy for kindle. So when they talk about a subject and refer to a figure I have no idea what they are talking about.

Best fantasy book I've read in years!

It's not often that I am easily drawn into a fiction novel but from the very first page, this book drew me in and held me captive through the entire journey. The details are so poetically painted to make you feel as if you are actually there, seeing and experiencing everything yourself. The characters are quite endearing and enchanting, hard not to fall in love with. This book is definitely full of heart. It is written in a way that can be enjoyed by young and old alike. My 10 year old daughter is currently reading and enjoying it as well. I am very much looking forward to the next books in this spellbinding trilogy!

Good textbook

I like this textbook a lot even though it's a textbook. It uses a lot of sample trials to further explain and clarify points of interest. My one dislike about the book is the treatment of vocabulary. There are some words that are in bold in the text, but they are not included in the glossary. Some words aren't defined directly in the text even though they are in bold, but they are included in the glossary; and some words that seem very important are only in italics. However, overall I think it does a really good job of making this information as clear and easy to understand as possible and I really like the example cases. The questions at the end of the chapters are also very useful and can help review the main points of the chapter.

Engaging and useful textbook

I hate reading textbooks as much as the next college guy, but this book is good enough to make it somewhat bearable.
The cases help explain things and it is written in plain English which makes it easy to understand.

This is an interesting book. There is a lot of information in it. It would be a great book to purchase if you are planning on studying law. Since I am not a law student, I am glad that I rented the book, as I probably won't use it again after this semester is over.

About the Author
Peter Engel is a science writer, graphic designer and architect. His origami has been displayed at the De Young Museum and Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, CA, the Oakland Museum of California and Seian University of Art and Design in Otsu, Japan. He is also the author of "Origami from Angelfish to Zen". Engel lives in Berkeley, CA.

Award-winning quilter Margie Engel is also an aviddesigner and teacher. She's the founder and president of EduQuilters, a group of volunteers who introduce quilting to kids. She's widely known for her classes, retreats, cruises, and community service.

The Greatest

This is the best book that has ever been published. The models go from intermediate to extremely difficult.The hardest models in the book are the deer, the two crabs, the knight on horseback (one sheet), the octopus (has eyes), the squid (has eyes), and the butterfly (has eyes). These are the models that get so small that you have to start out with a newspaper in order to even contemplate finishing them. I have made a few of these models like the knight on horseback and the two crabs, but I am still working on the butterfly because that one is simply amazing. This is a good book but it is definately not for beginners or people with patience that runs out after an hour or the tenth sheet.

Engel's unique perspective brings out the art in origami

Never before have I seen an origami book that brings in so much art, design, and mathematics. Not only does Engel make incredible and very challenging origami, but his sense of design makes it a delight to see come about. His first 81 pages are introduction and theoretical discussion of origami and the design concepts behind the artform. While he may be a bit esoteric at times, his discussion is quite interesting as he delves into fields ranging from music to geometry to architecture. The models show wonderful 3-D realism for the most part and will pose a challenge to all but very advanced folders (and if you still need a challenge use smaller paper). I especially enjoyed the octopus, squid and knight on horseback.

Great book...for the right person

The first half of the book is mostly text and reminds me of Godel, Escher, Bach (by Douglas Hofstadter) but for origami. I would like to see this half expanded out into a full book.
The second half is beautiful, intricate models such as the hummingbird, the octopus and the reindeer. I've been folding for about 6 months and I could tell just looking at the folding instructions that the later models like the crab were too hard. What I didn't realize was that even the relatively simple hummingbird is difficult.
At first I thought the folding instructions were unclear (and the hummingbird does have a typo, you should start with the butterfly fish instructions, not the angelfish ones). But after I puzzled my way through each step, I realized that these instructions are simply meant for a more proficient folder. All the information is there but the handholding is not.
If you are looking for some challenging models and thought-provoking text on creativity and origami, this is the book. If you are just starting out you could still buy it as a goal to work towards if that fits your personality. If that would be discouraging, I recommend "The Origami Handbook" as a simpler place to start.

It works

I'm a Massage therapist -medical intuitive/reader. Like most in this filed, I practice both east and west modalities-a wide variety like sports massage and energy work, I find using these personally,also giving client's routines as a sort of homework or post care has had a huge response in not only weight loss physically but mentally, spiritually emotionally and energetically. It's quite amazing. I'm currently conducting my own Field study to give some sort of evidence to support these claims. For me it's natural and easy to put the time and effort sense I mediate several times daily. (Morning,night, and in between each session to clear my space and heal)

Mudras are ancient wisdom

This book is an excellent primer on the mudras for weight loss. I jumped at the chance to learn about them. I learned about my first mudras in Qi gong class. One little suggestion: practice them with some stillness or quiet mind, not while watching television. Focus on the breath. Note the recommendation at the end of the book about how to bundle a group of the mudras for weight loss. I love the fact that there are also wonderful side benefits.

This is not a fad diet but a time tested technique used for centuries! Very simple to use although it does take some time everyday to complete. I will recommend it to all my clients that need to lose weight

A good book on musical signal processing concepts

If you are to really understand what is going on in this book you need volume one where the foundations are discussed. Likewise, volume one of Musimathics will often stop short of a truly complete explanation and say that further study will be picked up in volume two. Thus, these two volumes are actually just the halves of one book. However, if you are interested in musical signal processing, you probably need to read volume two. It covers much ground in depth, and gives numerous examples that are very practical and accessible for people who are working with musical and audio signals. The appendix has some useful tutorials and tables involving mathematics if you happen to be rusty. The following is the table of contents:

Extraordinary Beyond the Title, a must for all Math Lovers

The sad thing about this series is that the keywords that invite readers to stop by, hide the fact that these texts go far beyond music, to USE music as a gentle introduction to extremely complex, relevant and timely math concepts. The best teachers use four paths to explain a math concept: verbal, formulaic, algorithmic and pictographic. These help the brain comprehend the topic regardless of our learning modality. The authors here are simply MASTERFUL math teachers, and clarify everything from Eulers Law (relation of e, the base of the natural logarithms to pi, the base of the trig functions) to Fourier Transforms, in a way that a bright High School student will get. If you've been out of math (any math) for a long time, and want a masterful review of math concepts and techniques, this series is THE place to start. You can then extend that foundation to many other applied areas, from signal processing to physics, voice recognition, etc. Fourier transforms (and their more recent spin off in Cepstrums) are being used in too many fields to list today, from radar and electronic engineering, to whale songs.

In every section, the author's excitement is contagious. Rather than give a bunch of dry proofs that reek of hubris and disregard for the reader, Gareth uses a "curious mind" tone, as if he were just learning and discovering this too, like a kind of puzzle or murder mystery. Loy is Monk, Holmes and Columbo combined. For example, he gives a few expansion series for e, then says: "Wow, there seems to be a striking and beautiful pattern here, doesn't there? Wonder what it can be?" Leave it to a guy into both math and music to see the wonder in a time series!

One more example. Any texts on waveforms have to involve deep calculus, especially PDE's. Unfortunately, deep PDE's don't happen until grad school. But, rather than assume the reader uses calculus all day long, Loy starts with the basics at "now let's see how the first derivative is actually slope finding and integration is the area covered by the moving curve..." including those perhaps more musically inclined who have forgotten what a derivative is. Astonishingly, Loy sneaks around the dry topic of limits to use MUSIC as a great practical refesher on calculus (p. 263 of the second volume, in the section that is the hottest topic in Physics today, from Astronomy to Medical Imaging to of course music: Resonance).

Gareth is one of the few mathematicians around who can relate math to the astonishment of life around us. After all, our brain is doing advanced Fourier Transforms every time we cross a street in traffic, and when we get an MRI, the Fourier Transforms that convert magnetic alignment to pictures are assuming that the atoms in our body are a song, which when pulsed with a radio wave, will sing the positions of their water molecules back to us in harmonics that can be seen as well as heard.

Highly recommend this series, not only for everyone interested in math and music, but math and life!

Solid intro to DSP concepts for musicians

The first volume of Musicmathics is primarily an intro to the mathematical aspects of music theory, harmonics, scale construction, music perceptions, etc.. The second volume is basically an introduction to Digital Signal Processing (DSP) with discussion of how it applies to music.

My background is in Electrical Engineering so I am well versed in the basic DSP concepts outlined in this book. Gareth Loy has done a fantastic job of 'gently' presenting this material so that even musicians without extensive advanced mathematical training should be able to grasp it. I have seen these concepts presented in a number of different textbooks and this book is far more straightforward than many of the EE signal processing books. Loy goes out of his way to highlight which concepts are the most important and often gives multiple illustrations to highlight the implications of these key concepts. I wish I had this book when I was first learning DSP!

The one complaint I have is that too much attention is given to Fourier techniques and not enough attention paid to Wavelet based methods which are increasingly replacing windowed fourier variants like STFT in many real world applications. However, with the background material presented here the interested reader should be able to quickly grasp the fundamentals of wavelets.

Highly recommended for anyone interested in DSP, music synthesis/analysis, sound modeling, etc..

A parallel history of FDR and the US Conservation Movement

Only a quarter of the way through, but this is an exhaustive examination of the Conservation Movement in the USA, and at the same time a biography of FDR, who turns out to be much more of a lifetime conservationist than I ever knew about. I enjoy going through this episodic history of both and learn something from almost every page, including many facts that I only understood partially before.

It will take some time to get through Brinkley's account because he sure has done his homework.

Wonderful and informative. I have always admired FDR, and now I do so even more. One for the library to pass on to the grandchildren. Thank you Douglas Brinkley for all your research and the skill with which you put it all together.

One of The greatest books I have read... Remembering one of the worlds greatest leaders... Who set up a million man volunteer army to get through the depression and help conserve Americas wild and wonderful lands... Got us through the WWII in Europe and the Pacific but always had trees, birds and conservation on his mind.... Wish he could have stayed on to help conserve other parts of the world.. In Africa, Brasil, Asia... We seem to be in a leadership crisis today in 2016... What an amazing human being ... And let's go visit all his parks and wildlife refuges.. Wow
