Are individual experiences valid scientific data?

This is one of the most provocative books I have read in years. In the first few chapters Mr. Talbot describes the emerging holographic paradigm in science, drawing on David Bohm's work in quantum physics and Karl Pribam's work in neuroscience. I found both descriptions to be fascinating, and especially enjoyed the historical context for the work of these two seminal thinkers. As a person with a master's degree in neuroscience and chaos/complexity theory, I found a couple of his simplifications misleading, but would give him high marks for his overall comprehension of the conclusions of Pribam and his followers.
The remaining 2/3 of the book is a discussion of how the holographic paradigm may provide a rational basis for interpreting a wide variety of phenomenon located around the fringes of established science. He looks at everything from strange historical "miracles" like stigmata and appearances of the Virgin Mary to modern psychic abilities and LSD experiences, from out-of-body and near-death-experiences to UFO abductions. In addition, he compares language used in the modern scientific discussion of holography with the language used by ancient mystical traditions.
Mr. Talbot's writing style is unusually clear and lucid. All of this makes for a highly engaging book. It kept me up late every night for more than a week. I am a person who has had an OBE/NDE (out-of-body, near-death-experience), and can tell you that his description of such events is an astoundingly accurate portrayal of what I experienced.
I am also a scientist, and know that most of my highly rational, empirical colleages would have trouble accepting a majority of Mr. Talbot's conclusions. This work addresses something so completely out of the realm of everyday experience for most people, and probes a world that is normally invisible to the five senses. Hence, objective, empirical science -- as defined by a conventional theorist or practicing technician -- simply cannot address these experiences. They are outside the range of focus of the tool that Western minds currently rely on.
The service that Mr. Talbot provides is a challenge to rethink the conventional definition of science so that it can take into account a much wider range of human experience. What he argues for is the acceptance, as valid scientific data, of the experiences of individual humans, across cultures and throughout history, that are remarkably consistent with one another. These experiences address aspects of reality that are invisible to the skeptical eye, but become obvious to the person who chooses to develop other forms of perception.
As a person who was unwittingly thrown into an OBE/NDE experience, I am naturally inclined to read a book like this one with an open mind, and felt immensely rewarded for doing so. However, if I had reviewed the same book before having my own personal experience of some of the phenomena it describes, I would have reviewed it as a new-age excursion into a realm of fantasy. I am completely sympathetic to some of the reviewers who see it that way, and respectfully disagree.
I believe there is an extraordinary synthesis happening among the realms of human experience, one that can validate each individual's story, however unusual, and also one that honors all the different ways of knowing. I see Mr. Talbot's work as one of the more important bridges yet constructed between traditional science and spirituality, between rational discourse about repeatable, empirically verifiable phenomenon and the quirky, esoteric or mythological elements of personal experience that actually define most people's experience of reality. This book is a "must read" for any passionate seeker of truth.

One of the best books ever written

I've read The Holographic Universe often, and have gained new insights into the nature of consciousness and reality from its riches every time. I consider it to be author Michael Talbot's most important work, as well as one of the best books ever written on the subject of so-called paranormal phenomena.

Talbot's fascination for finding scientific explanations for psychic and paranormal activity began when he noticed objects moving inexplicably around him, regardless where he lived. He would sometimes awaken to find socks draped on his houseplants, and occasionally found objects in his apartment that he knew for a fact had been hundreds of miles away. His real-life experiences with such shifts in reality combined with his training in physics led him to explore possible reasons for these and other mysterious happenings.

Talbot begins his book with an excellent introduction to physicist David Bohm's concept of the holographic model of the universe, and combines the physics model with Karl Pribram's work on the holographic model of the brain. The result is a marvelous description of a non-local, interconnected and alive universe that moves in response to our every thought and feeling.

I am very impressed with the clarity with which Talbot presents the concept of a holographic universe and how various paranormal phenomena can be explained within that model. Talbot's discussion is comprehensive, fascinating, clear, and packed with relevant and intriguing stories of paranormal phenomena. Out of body experiences (OBEs), near death experiences (NDEs), auric readings, psychokinesis, acupuncture, X-ray vision, healing, and psychic readings are all described and considered for placement into the holographic model.

Talbot presents a wealth of relevant research studies and scientific theories from David Bohm, Helmut Schmidt, Marilyn Schlitz, Robert Monroe, Charles Tart, Larry Dossey, Paul Davies, PMH Atwater, Ian Stevenson, Fred Alan Wolf, Harold Puthoff, Russell Targ, Lyall Watson, Stanislav Grof, and many others.

important even after a decade

Talbot has created a great book. The Holographic Universe is a discourse on a new way (paradigm) for viewing life and the Universe, based primarily on revelations from quantum physics. While my copy is over 10 years old, and physics has moved forward a bit since then, most of the material in the book is as revelant today as it was when my copy was published in 1991.
The basic premise of the book concerns the nature of holography, and how the Universe and our existence and experience can be viewed through a holographic model. For those who don't know, a holgram or holograph is a photographic image created by splitting a laser beam and recording interference patterns between the two beams after one has been reflected off the subject to be photographed. It has the remarkable property of containing the entire image on each piece if you cut it or break it into smaller pieces. This idea of the whole contained in each piece is the basis of the Holographic principle. It has been found to be very useful in explaining the behavior of many natural systems, hence the purpose of this book.
Talbot discusses many areas of life, including particle physics and physical health. He quotes and cites authorities like Bohm, Grof, Pribram, and many others too numerous to mention here. The book is an incredible resource for a new view of reality as well as a huge listing of people, books, and research to go into more depth on the subjects covered. It is one of my favorite books, and I have given more than one away as a gift. At one time, I kept two additional copies just to loan out.
My favorite parts of the book are the experiment in mass dreams near the end, and the section starting on page 90 dealing with the placebo effect and Multiple Personality Disorder(MPD). The fact that placebo effect can cure illness at a higher rate than many pharmaceuticals should make people sit up and take notice. If that doesn't wake you up, then the research on the health capabilities of people with MPD ought to really rattle your sense of reality darned hard.
The fact that people with MPD can turn illnesses on and off totally destroys the whole Cartesian-clockwork view of physical reality, not to mention the Western allopathic model of medicine. These people can experience radical changes in their biology just by changing which personality is "in charge" of the body. I'm talking total disappearance of diabetes, complete changes in vision (color blindness as well as refractive errors), allergic reactions, erasing the effects of drugs and alcohol; tumors, scars, and cysts coming and going, and more. All of these things are well-documented in the scientific literature (cited in the book). I personally know of a case (not in the book) of a broken bone that would not show on x-rays unless the personality who broke the bone was present! The person who recounted this to me was very much frightened by it, and reluctantly revealed it only when I raved about this sction of the book.
The MPD research alone should force a total redirection of our health research. Of course it won't, because trillion-dollar industries rely on expensive cures that don't necessarily work, and those industries couldn't care less about your and my health, only our ability to pay.
This book is a terrific read and will open your eyes to wonderful new things. It may even open you up to a whole new life, it is that powerful. It is still vital after a decade, and well worth reading. A no-holds-barred 5.

Several sentences were awkward or simply didn't make sense, several instances of simple incorrect grammar (your vs you're), and he kept calling the read "my friend or bud". Otherwise, it was interesting.

About the Author
Robert R. Ulmer is Professor and Chair of the Department of Speech Communication at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. He also holds two secondary appointments in the College of Public Health at the University of Arkansas Medical Sciences. His teaching, research, and consulting interests focus on creating effective risk and crisis communication through renewal, growth, collaboration, and opportunity. He has served as a consultant working with a wide variety of public, private, governmental, and not-for-profit organizations on how to effectively prepare for and manage risk and crises effectively. He has published articles in Management Communication Quarterly; Communication Yearbook; The Journal of Business Ethics; Public Relations Review; the Journal of Organizational Change Management; the Journal of Applied Communication Research; the Handbook of Crisis Communication; The Handbook of Risk and Crisis Communication, The Encyclopedia of Public Relations; and The Handbook of Public Relations.

Timothy L. Sellnow is Professor of Risk and Crisis Communication in the Department of Communication at the University of Kentucky, Lexington, and currently serves as theme leader for the risk communication research team at the National Center for Food Protection and Defense, a Center of Excellence sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security. Sellnow’s primary research and teaching focus is on risk and crisis communication. Matthew W. Seeger is Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication at Wayne State University. His research interests concern crisis and risk communication, crisis response and agency coordination, health communication, the role of media in crisis, crisis and communication ethics, failure of complex systems, and post-crisis renewal. He has worked closely with the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on communication and the anthrax attack and on communication and pandemic influenza preparedness. He is an affiliate of the National Center for Food Protection and Defense where he studies issues of food safety and recalls. This story is BOOK 2 of The Prime Series.
Nicolas and Evie return to his family, his clan, after initially being exiled because of his lack of control over his tiger. His brother, Erick, who is also his Prime, needs Nicolas to travel to Chicago on clan related business, which could potentially be dangerous. While in Chicago, he comes head to head with the Master of the City, Corbin.....a powerful Vampire. Corbin meets with Nicolas and Evie, but an unexpected intruder might mess up Nicolas's plans. Does Nicolas have more than just the Royal blood needed to be a true leader ? Will his brother, the Prime, see Nicolas as a threat? And those Vampires, they are very sneaky, although I am beginning to like them more with each book, I am curious to know more about Corbin. I think he may be a little too interested in that unexpected intruder. This is a story about Nicolas, a hot, sexy weretiger and his mate Evie, beautiful, feisty and 100% human. Lots of HOT SEX but also a great storyline ! I can't wait to see what happens in the next book. These weretigers and vampires can't coexist for long without complications....

Another great book in the Prime Series.

Good Book. I really like the Prime series.
This is the second book following Nicholas and Evie. They are brought into the Weretigers stronghold to meet Nicholas' brother and mate. Nicholas is given a task by his brother the Prime. Although Evie is a human, she is fierce and sticks by him to help him with his task. On their journey they meet long lost family to bring them back to their pack along with a new character, Corbin, that I hope we see more of.

Good installment to the Prime series.

The British Union of Feminists?

It is common received wisdom that Europe's fascist movements were reactionary in their views of women, and even misogynist in their ideologies and policies. If the street fighters and tough-guys hated women and wanted to stay in the kitchen, the eugenicists and scientists viewed them only as breeding stock. Few considered women human beings. So we are told.

Like much received wisdom, there is a grain of truth in such ideas. But by all appearances,it is a rather tiny one.

In this study, Martin Durham examines the ideas of various fascist movements relating to women. He aspires to a European perspective, but is by far the most thorough and successful in his treatment of the British Union of Fascists (or BUF, for short), Sir Oswald Mosley's British Nazi movement of the 1930s, where he makes extensive use of primary sources. As Durham shows, the BUF's views on women were the very antithesis of reactionary, and indeed several members of the old "Suffragette" movement were active in the BUF. Taking on one issue at a time, the author contrasts the well-worn clich�s with the actual policy statements of Mosley and his cronies, with remarkable revelations as the result.

Thus we learn, for example, that the BUF not only did not oppose female employment outside the home, but in fact favored equal pay for equal work, with no regard for sex (p36f). Nor did the BUF oppose birth control measures (p38f) -- And in considering this, we must remember that such were not nearly as commonplace and widely accepted in the 1930s as they are today. (In fact, this permissive position cost the BUF some of its support from Britain's right-wing Roman Catholics.) More familiarly conservative, but still anything but hostile to women, was the BUF's stance on pornography and other sexual immorality, which it vigorously opposed (p42f). As might also be expected, pornography, prostitution and the white slave trade were generally identified with the Jewish element in British society.

Further, the BUF mobilized women for its activities: as support staff, but also as speakers and even candidates for the party's tickets for parliament. Sir Oswald is on the record proudly noting that his (comparatively minuscule) movement fielded more female candidacies than did either of the big national parties. The elite corps of the BUF's female cadre was trained in first aid and jujitsu, so they could defend themselves against the violent attacks of the leftist opposition (p50f). If that is not "empowering" (as the current jargon goes), then what is?

Of course, none of this means that the BUF were "feminists" as that word is currently understood; the title of this review is largely humorous. But then, ideological "feminism" as of today is quite divorced from the ideas of the old "Women's Rights" movement. These, as we can see, the BUF largely supported (for example, equitable wages for women workers); while this is not what we will tend to expect from a self-styled group of Nazis, their position is nevertheless quite clear from the evidence that Durham adduces. In acknowledging as much, Durham surely has no intention of in any way "rehabilitating" or promoting the BUF; but he professes a need for understanding fascism better, looking to the facts rather than to stereotypes. Drawing a parallel with modern right-wing movements (on which he is apparently an academic expert), he sees a danger that these are increasingly successful in recruiting female supporters. Should society wish to counteract this trend, he argues, it is necessary to understand how and why women are drawn to these groups, and a caricatured view of them is not helpful in this regard. While this reviewer is quite unfamiliar with such matters, and thus unable to comment on these particular facts -- His primary interesting being history rather than contemporary political sociology -- the argument as such appears a sound one.

In any case, Martin Durham's reappraisal of the (by the standards of its day) quite extraordinarily woman-friendly BUF is a welcome addition to our knowledge of historical Nazism. By and large, the only relevant complaint would be that the book's present title is somewhat misleading; the book focuses overwhelmingly on British matters, rather than women and "fascism" as an international phenomenon. This could have been made clearer. Still, this is quite a minor flaw to a highly original and useful work of historical scholarship.

Highly enjoyable

For many Philp Kotler, marketing guru and scholar par excellence, needs no introduction. Now his laser-focussed analytical mind has been cast over the thorny economic issue of capitalism.
Even if you are not an economics nerd you are in for a real treat with this book that feels oh-so-short yet it really does cram in a lot of readable, digestible information. Kotler considers 14 major problems that he says undermine capitalism, such as job creation, debt burdens, wealth disparity and economic cycles, explaining clearly and patiently the issues with crystal-clear clarity.
We are not in a hopeless, no-win situation, however claims Kotler, pointing out that many initiatives could be implemented, combining private and public efforts into a force for positive change. That is the easy part. Convincing those with the levers of power to put away their self-interest or myopia might be something else.
Many corporations wield more power and influence than national governments. The combined value of the world’s 200 largest companies account for about 28% of the world’s total gross domestic product (GDP). Many companies are effectively larger than countries when comparing revenues to GDP. Wal-Mart is larger than Norway, Exxon Mobile is larger than Thailand, and General Electric is larger than New Zealand. Harnessing group think and social responsibility can be a challenge. Kotler notes that because so many city, state and national governments are cash poor, they are selling normal government functions to private firms. Where will it end? One day could there be a return to the old “company towns” but in a new guise: a country effectively owned by a cabal of a few too-big-to-challenge mega corporations?
It is worthy to reproduce Kotler’s fourteen stated shortcoming of capitalism, whereby he believes that capitalism: proposes little or no solution to persisting poverty: generates a growing level of income and wealth inequality; fails to pay a living wage to billions of workers; may not provide enough human jobs in the face of growing automation; doesn’t charge businesses with the full social costs of their activities; exploits the environment and natural resources in the absence of regulation; creates business cycles and economic instability; emphasizes individualism and self-interest at the expense of community and the commons; encourages high consumer debt and leads to a growing financially driven rather than producer-driven economy; lets politicians and business interests collaborate to subvert the economic interests of the majority of citizens; favours short-run profit planning over long-run investment planning; should have regulations regarding product quality, safety, truth in advertising, and anticompetitive behaviour; tends to focus narrowly on GDP growth and needs to bring social values and happiness into the market equation. Ouch! Where’s the good news?
A further shameful, damning indictment is that about five billion of the world’s seven billion citizens are either poor or extremely poor, often lacking food, energy, education, healthcare and any real prospect of a future. It doesn’t need the extreme of a socialist utopia to see the inequality, whereby even a doubling of their daily income – a dollar or two – could make a real, transformed difference. Kotler notes that poverty pours its poison on the rest of mankind. A claim that is sadly hard to deny. There is no automatic correlation between economic growth and economic development. Kotler shows the example of the African country of Angola, where its GDP grew by 20% yet poverty increased substantially – much of the higher GDP flowed into the pockets of the ruling elites and their relatives and friends.
A review cannot do this book justice. There’s just so much data, whether it is low pay, executive compensation, tax laws and inequalities or even national bureaucracies, Kotler cuts right the bone. It isn’t pleasant reading on many levels, even for someone who prides himself on being reasonably well informed about world events and happenings.
Who really should not read this book at least once and digest its contents? Those who have even the remotest connection to the levers of power should be locked in a room and forced to digest Kotler’s analysis and act upon it. The rest of us should use it as a means of seeking change. Capitalism need not be bad. It just needs a bit of a tweak here and there. Are we prepared to try and get things changed? Changed before it might be too late!

Hits the Right Issues, But His Solutions Not Likely to Be Impactful

In 2014, the Harvard Business School surveyed its alumni and reported this finding: 'The U.S. is competitive to the extent that firms operating here do two things: win in global markets and lift the living standards of average Americans. The U.S. economy is doing the first of these but failing at the second.'

The collapse of the U.S.S.R. had left most Americans feeling triumphant - 'their' economic model (free enterprise capitalism) had been proven superior - we truly were the Shining City on the Hill that all others should admire and emulate. Even today, despite the rise of China's much stronger market economy with socialist characteristics ('authoritarian capitalism'), many Americans continue to claim that our economic model is without equal. Philip Kotler is well positioned to credibly criticize that model - having served as the doyen of American marketing experts for decades. Rather than simply deny the existence of problems, he thoughtfully states and explores each of 14 major concerns, and then provides proposed remedies.

1)The Persistence of Poverty: During Clinton's presidency (1993-2001), U.S. poverty average 11%. In 2008 it was 13.2%, by November 2012, it had climbed to 16% - per the U.S. Census Bureau. Our poverty level is 28th among all nations.

2)Income Inequality on the Rise: The grand idea of capitalism is that those with capital will apply it to create more wealth that will lead to more jobs and income for everyone - their wealth will 'trickle down' and all boats will rise. Recently, however, wealth has been more likely to 'trickle up.' Ultimately, capitalism will be judged on the degree to which it improves the lives of all its citizens. While a number of interesting solutions exist to reduce these growing differences in earnings, the problem lies in how politics interferes with economics and allows the rich and their publicists to confuse average citizens as to what lies in their true interests. In the U.S. six Walton family members' net worth in 2007 exceeded that of the 100 million Americans at the bottom, the top three hedge fund managers in 2011 received a total of $8.5 billion, and the income of the top 25 hedge fund partners totaled $21 billion in 2013. Kotler recommends more progressive taxation.

3)Workers Under Siege: Most workers in today's crowded planet cannot survive except by working for capitalists. We've seen vivid examples of such in Britain during the Industrial Revolution, as well as more recently in the U.S. - 60-hour weeks, child labor, and sweatshop conditions - documented by Upton Sinclair's 'The Jungle,' Steinbeck's 'The Grapes of Wrath,' and films of life in early-Detroit auto plants. While there is little doubt that unions helped workers earn higher wages/benefits and raise their standard of living, today's unions are weak. Kotler offers no likely effective solutions. Mine - reduce offshoring and sending jobs to Mexico, aka Reagan's approach to Japanese automakers.

4)Job Creation in the Face of Growing Automation (and off-shoring): In the 1870s, 70 - 80% of Americans were employed in agriculture - today less than 2%. Fortunately, manufacturing increased to supply enough jobs as agriculture demand declined - by 1973 manufacturing accounted for 22% of our GDP, but only 9% today. The question is whether we can get back to a job-abundant society. Kotler offers no likely effective solutions.

5)Companies Not Covering Their 'Social Costs:' Air, odor, and water pollution, ozone-layer depletion, carbon-dioxide emissions, etc. are spillover effects of economic activity that affect those not directly involved. Such 'market failures' are the reason for government intervention in various markets. However, sometimes the cost of intervention exceeds the likely benefits. Kotler offers no likely effective solutions.

11)Favors Short-Run Profit Planning Over Long-Run Investment Planning: Wall Street emphasis on the 'next quarter' has driven millions of jobs out of the U.S. Kotler, however, offers no likely effective solutions.

In my opinion, Phil Kotler is the world's preeminent authority on how to create or increase demand for whatever is offered for sale or trade. In a word, "marketing." Therefore, it comes as no surprise that his latest book offers "real solutions for a troubled economic system" in a global marketplace. Economics (for better or worse) provide the infrastructure for commerce. Having earned a Ph.D. degree in economics (1956) from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.), Kotler is a results-driven empiricist who applies his pragmatic skills to a range of immensely complicated problems that include poverty, income inequality, workers under severe pressure, job creation despite growing automation, ignoring or underestimating social costs," environmental exploitation, the dangers of narrow self-interest, the debt burden at the federal/'state/county/local levels, and politics' subversion of economics. These are indeed very serious issues and Kotler minces no words when sharing his thoughts and feelings about how to establish and then nourish/sustain high-performance capitalism.

For example, in the first chapter, he identifies what he characterizes as "the fourteen shortcomings of capitalism." One of his primary objectives in the book is to0 examine each of them as well as the underlying fo0rces and causes - and propose possible, plausible solutions. "This book discusses how capitalism plays out in the United States as in many other countries of the world. As more countries move to a higher level of economic development, their problems will resemble more closely the problems, and the solutions, that play out in the United States."

As Kotler carefully explains throughout his lively and eloquent narrative, "The fourteen shortcomings are not independent of each other. They are highly interrelated. The problem of poverty is part of the problem of income inequality, which itself is leads to low demand, which leads to too much unemployment, which leads to a clash between austerity and stimulus as two potential remedies, which is handicapped by political lobbying that gets legislators to vote for the causes that will keep them in power and therefore not vote for financial regulation and more environmental; protection, and so on.

"All this means that in working on any one problem, such as higher minim um wages, so many other issues come into play, such as some businesses possibly closing down, thus creating fewer jobs and more unemployment and incentivizing companies to import more goods from abroad, which leads to even less employment at home, and so on."

I agree with this overview. At the same time, I think it is more possible than ever before to diminish the nature and extent of some problems in one area such as unemployment that will, in turn, diminish the nature and extent of problems in other areas such as income inequality. Moreover, I think that communication, cooperation, and (most important of all) collaboration between and among federal, state, county, and local governments can increase and improve -- during the problem-solving process -- if more efficient use is made of various electronic technologies.

Philip Kotler will not -- because no single person can -- solve all the problems in our troubled economic system but he does provide in his latest book an agenda, a mindset, a rationale, and a game plan that can have significant impact if (HUGE "if") enough people become engaged in achieving goals that will accelerate personal growth and professional development throughout and beyond the United States. In this context, I am again reminded of an observation by Margaret Mead: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

About the Author
Srini Pillay, M.D. is an Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. After graduating as the top medical student, he was the top award winner at Harvard during his residency and one of the top three award winners during his psychiatry residency in the US. He then directed the Outpatient Anxiety Disorders Program at McLean Hospital-Harvard’s largest psychiatric hospital and also completed 17 years of nationally funded brain imaging research. His first book, “Life Unlocked: 7 Revolutionary Lessons to Overcome Fear” (Rodale, August 2010) was voted one of five finalists in “Books for a Better Life” in the motivational category. In addition, his next book: “Your Brain and Business: The Neuroscience of Great Leaders” was peer-reviewed by Wharton Business School and is scheduled to be released in March of 2011. (FT Press, Kindle, November 2010). Dr. Pillay is widely regarded as a motivational speaker who is able to explain the science behind seemingly non-rational phenomena. Einstein said many quotable observations but the two that are most relevant to this outstanding book are:
"Make everything as simple as possible, but not simpler"
"Any intelligent fool can make things bigger and more complex... It takes a touch of genius and a lot of courage to move in the opposite direction"

After reading Pillay's "Your Brain and Business" I was attracted to "The Science Behind the Law of Attraction". I have been studying success literature for over twenty years and only recently did the relatively new discovery of brain plasticity allow me to put it all together.

Pillay is spot on point with his laser focus of what may appear to be disarmingly simple. Don't let that fool you. "The Science Behind the Law of Attraction" is what the "Secret" and even "Think and Grow Rich" and the other great success literature are trying to tell us without knowing the science behind it. Pillay knows the science and shares it with us all. Read it thoughtfully, follow the directions and you will begin to attract what you want

Don't do it.

I was expecting quiet a different thing here. What this book is: a workbook. Since I already know how to use the magnetic attraction the workbook is useless to me. I had hoped for some ACTUAL scientific explanations. Unfortunately, if you are familiar with the concept you already know what this book is about and if you are not already familiar with the concept this book is useless. I am donating it to the local library.
