About the Author

Christine Loh is the CEO of the public policy think tank, Civic Exchange. A former legislator, she had a ringside seat to political events in Hong Kong in the run-up to 1997 and immediately beyond the transition. She was the first, and only one to date,to raise a debate in 1995 about how the Chinese Communist Party would operate post-1997 for which she was pilloried by opponents. Christine Loh is a lawyer by training and became a politician in 1992. Since her retirement from politics in 2000, she has concentrated on policy research and is a published author of many works.

The hidden hand of the CCP in Hong Kong

Ever since the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) was founded in 1921, Hong Kong has consistently been regarded as a threat and opportunity by party leaders. First as a British colony until retrocession in 1997 and then as part of the "one country, two systems," the CCP views the territory as a potential springboard from which foreign powers could undermine the authorities on the mainland.

Simultaneously, Hong Kong was the main platform where both the British and Chinese governments could conduct dialogue and, as 1997 approached, a source of much-needed capital and an instrument to test special administrative rule.

This, and much more, is the focus of former Hong Kong legislator Christine Loh's fascinating Underground Front. The amount of information contained in her well-researched book makes it an extremely useful tool to understand the CCP's policies in Hong Kong.

Loh walks us through what she sees as the six main phases of CCP relations with Hong Kong: early Marxism in Hong Kong; the early years of CCP rule in China; the Cultural Revolution; the Deng Xiaoping era; the post-Tiananmen Square Massacre era; and the first decade after retrocession.

Throughout this time -- and even after Hong Kong became a special administrative region -- we see the CCP acting as if it were a criminal organization forced to remain underground. Part of this, we learn, is the result of Maoism's lack of mass appeal in Hong Kong, which since the Treaty of Nanjing in 1842 had been ideologically shaped by the British.

Though the seeds of leftist thought were sown in Hong Kong, mostly via trade unions, Beijing was forced to show restraint lest its actions provoke a strong response from London. The exile of more than 1 million Chinese to Hong Kong -- including supporters of the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT), industrialists, and ordinary Chinese who had grown tired of political repression -- also created a population stratum that was unreceptive to Maoism.

On the 1967 Riots that erupted in Hong Kong, Loh uncovers proof of indirect support by the CCP (for example, through condemnation of the Hong Kong authorities' reaction to the riots in state-owned newspapers) given to the leftist protesters. In the tense situation, premier Zhou Enlai stands out as the uber pragmatist, who despite calls by ultra-leftists in Beijing to take Hong Kong by force, insisted on a "go slow" approach to the colony, saying the time was not ripe for reunification.

In the early 1980s, with Deng now in charge of national policy, the first signs of an entente between London and Beijing emerge on the return of Hong Kong to China (Beijing never recognized its loss of sovereignty over the territory and successfully fought a battle at the UN to have it derecognized as a colonial entity).

As the negotiations commenced, Beijing made use of its Xinhua news agency bureau in Hong Kong, which served as a cover for CCP political action.

Between 1983 and 1997, fearing it could not trust London -- especially in the wake of the Tiananmen Square Massacre -- Beijing introduced tens of thousands (by some accounts, 83,000) of fifth-columnists, ostensibly on "family reunion" visits, to ensure steady progress toward reunification.

As 1997 approached, Beijing and its proxies in Hong Kong intensified their united front strategy and co-opted the colony's elite to ensure stability in the lead-up to, and after, retrocession.

Loh adroitly captures Beijing's hard-line approach to the last governor, Chris Patten, which it referred to as "a sinner of a thousand years" for what it saw as efforts to create instability prior to the handover. From London's view, the only way it could abandon the colony with honor was to sow the seeds of democracy, which is what Patten tried to accomplish by making alterations to the Joint Declaration, which stipulated the basic policies of the PRC in Hong Kong and would later serve as the basic constitutional document behind the Basic Law.

Interestingly, after retrocession the CCP continues to act as an underground body in Hong Kong, relying instead on political proxies, such as the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment and Progress of Hong Kong (DAB) and the Federation of Trade Unions, to accomplish its objectives. This is perhaps the result of Beijing's failure, prior to retrocession, to understand the high level of opposition to reunification among the residents of Hong Kong. A low profile, rather than the shock therapy of a full CCP takeover of Hong Kong politics, may have been seen as the best strategy. Still, there is no doubt who's in charge under "one country, two systems."

Though Loh makes little effort to hide her preference for a more democratic Hong Kong, her work does not descend into outright condemnation of the CCP on ideological grounds. She recognizes that historical forces have resulted in a Hong Kong whose political future is very much determined by the central government in Beijing. This, however, does not mean that she isn't critical of what has happened to Hong Kong since it became part of "one country, two systems." The last section, in which she looks at the local media and electoral manipulation, constitutional contradictions as well as the failure of an executive-led, elite-driven administration to meet the needs of the population, clearly shows that Loh is uneasy with the direction in which Hong Kong has headed since 1997.

About the Author
Gordon Nickel is adjunct professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He began his study of Islam at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, where he completed an M.A. in South Asian Islam and wrote a thesis on Shah Wali Allah's principles of Qur'anic exegesis. He researched and wrote his PhD dissertation under Dr. Andrew Rippin at the University of Calgary. His dissertation focus was the theme of 'tampering with the earlier scriptures' as developed in the earliest commentaries on the Qur'an. He also has an M.A. in Hebrew Bible and has completed several years of research in Indian Islam toward a doctorate at Osmania University in Hyderabad, India. In 2011 Brill Academic Publishers published Gordon's monograph "Narratives of Tampering in the Earliest Commentaries on the Qur'an." In recent years Gordon has taught on Islam and the Qur'an at Associated Canadian Theological Schools, the University of British Columbia, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, the University of Calgary, and Columbia International University.

Gordon Nickel invites us to come and reason together!

Excellent...Excellent read...Dr. Nickel has done excellent research on this subject and calls us all to the table to reason together...
There is lots of superficial discussion of this subject but none has gone as in as detail, with as much love and respect for the other. This book addresses many false assumptions that many people have about the relationship between the Abrahamic faiths. READ READ READ!!!!!

This was a great help to me

Very impressed with the calm, collected attitude the author has towards trying to carry the conversation forward. The author included all footnotes and bibliography at the bottom of the page that contains each respective note. This was a great help to me, and shows the honesty and integrity of placing all sources right in plain view. Many authors bury these things at the end of the book, not to try and hide things, or course, but it's a pain to continually flip back and forth from the text to the notes.

One of the top 10 non-fiction books I've read. I honestly couldn't put it down. It really opened my eyes to the existence of variant Muslim scholarship since the 7th century. There's plenty of sources listed for one to continue their research with the primary sources themselves if one chooses. Very impressed with the high level of professional courtesy and scholarship presented in this book.

It then presents studies on the fundamental features of search dynamics and mechanisms in EO with a focus on self-organized optimization, evolutionary probability distribution, and structure features (e.g., backbones), which are based on the authors’ recent research results. Finally, it discusses applications of EO and MEO in multiobjective optimization, systems modeling, intelligent control, and production scheduling.

The authors present the advanced features of EO in solving NP-hard problems through problem formulation, algorithms, and simulation studies on popular benchmarks and industrial applications. They also focus on the development of MEO and its applications. About the Author

Professor Yong-Zai Lu (IEEE Fellow since 1998) earned his diploma degree from the Department of Chemical Engineering, Zhejiang University, China, in 1961, where he currently is an emeritus professor with the Institute of Cyber Systems and Control. He previously was a consulting professor at Shanghai Jiaotong University and a senior consultant at Supcon Co. China. During 1991 to 2003, he held senior consulting and technical positions at Bethlehem Steel Co., i2 Tech Inc. and Pavilion Tech Inc. in the US. He was a full professor and director of research at the Institute of Industrial Control, Zhejiang University, from 1984 to 1991. During 1980-1982, he was with Purdue University as a Visiting Scholar. He has supervised about 80 PhD and MS students. His research interests include system modeling, optimization, advanced control, intelligent control and computational intelligence, and their applications in production scale and real-world complex systems. He has authored and co-authored numerous SCI and EI papers and a number of books. He received National Science and Technology Progress Awards in China in 1989 and 1993, the ISA UOP Technology Award in 1989, and AISE Kelly Awards in the US in 1995 and 1996. He served as the President of IFAC from 1996 to 1999.

Dr. Yu-Wang Chen is a lecturer in decision sciences at the University of Manchester, UK. Prior to his current appointment, he was a postdoctoral research associate at the Decision and Cognitive Sciences (DCS) research centre of Manchester Business School, the University of Manchester, and a postdoctoral research fellow at the Department of Computer Science, Hong Kong Baptist University. He earned his PhD degree from the Department of Automation, Shanghai Jiao Tong University in 2008. He has published over 30 journal and conference papers. His research interests include multiple criteria decision analysis under uncertainties, modeling and optimization of complex systems, and risk analysis in supply chains.

Dr. Min-Rong Chen is an associate professor at the School of Computer, South China Normal University, China. She worked at the College of Information Engineering, Shenzhen University, China, from 2008 to 2015. She earned her PhD degree from the Department of Automation, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China, in 2008. She has published over 20 journal and conference papers and has been PI for two Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) projects. Her research interests include evolutionary computation and information security.

Dr. Peng Chen is a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Control Science and Engineering, Zhejiang University, and research engineer at the Research Institute of Supcon Group. He earned his PhD degree from Shanghai Jiaotong University, China, in 2011. He has published over 10 journal and conference papers and been working on a number of production-scale research projects on industrial process modeling and control. His research interests include extremal dynamics and computaional intelligence, system modeling, and optimization control.

Dr. Guo-Qiang Zeng is an associate professor at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Wenzhou University, China. He earned his PhD degree in Control Science and Engineering from Zhejiang University, China, in 2011. He has published over 20 journal and conference papers. He received the Best Poster Paper Finalist and Best Student Paper Finalist from the 8th World Congress on Intelligent Control and Automation, 2010. He also received an NSFC funding on an extremal optimization oriented project. His research interests include computational intelligence, micro-grid, power electronics, complex networks, and discrete event systems.

The meaning of life - with Zombies

There is a slightly religious tone to The Zombie-Driven life, which manifests itself through a group of survivors that Kenan meets whilst escaping the city with Katy. Through conversations with the survivor group, Kenan learns that the bug was created and distributed by a power-hungry Reverend and he sets out to exact his own revenge.

Novella's are a hard kind of story for me to get into. I love short stories but my preference is for full-length novels, so The Zombie-Driven life, whilst a quick read was also the type of story I would love to read in the full, fleshed-out version.

Mr. Wood writes clearly and succinctly - the dialogue is realistic and despite the opportunity to have some pretty cheesy moments, it wasn't difficult to take the characters seriously. I particularly liked Kenan as the slightly geeky boy who comes to realise some pretty awesome things about himself and gains confidence throughout the story.

I like the original name for the zombies used in this story (you want to know, read it and find out!) and the characters are surprisingly well fleshed-out (pun intended) for a novella. If you haven't read a zombie book before, and aren't really sure if it's for you, give The Zombie-Driven Life a try - it may just set you on the road to obsession!

A fun read

I really enjoyed this book! Although The Zombie-Driven Life is not my typical go-to book, this coming of age tale set in the middle of a zombie apocalypse was wonderfully entertaining. Teen aged Kenan is trying to find his place in a world where even the remaining humans are suspect. Kenan asks the age old question, "why am I here?" while battling flesh-eating monsters. Written in the style of Rick Warren's A Purpose Driven Life, Dave Wood's book is a wonderfully written, action-packed, fun read that I could not put down until I finished it!

The perfect coloring book for the fashionista!

I'm so bad at drawing but I can color! So this coloring book is perfect for me. Every page is filled with such chic illustrations - it's even great if you want to just outline to drawings to kind of learn how to sketch! I'm 30 and I totally enjoy this coloring book- i bought two so I could also give one to my niece. It's the perfect gift for a child or adult! If you have a daughter or niece, think of this as the perfect "mommy and me" activity! Highly recommend this stylish activity.

Love this coloring book. Love that it's different from a lot of the adult coloring books out there. Love that it's one sided and allows me to color with pencils and markers. I would definitely recommend this coloring books to anyone who colors to relieve stress or just for fun.
