John N. Gardner brings unparalleled experience to students as an author. The recipient of his institution's highest award for teaching excellence, John has over forty years of experience directing and teaching in the most widely emulated first-year seminar in the country, the University 101 course at the University of South Carolina (USC), Columbia. John is universally recognized as one of the country's leading educators for his role in initiating and orchestrating an international reform movement to improve the beginning college experience, a concept he coined as "the first-year experience." He is the founding executive director of the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition at USC, as well as the Policy Center on the First Year of College and the John N. Gardner Institute for Excellence in Undergraduate Education (www.jngi.org), both based in Brevard, N.C.�Betsy O. Barefoot is a writer, researcher, and teacher whose special area of scholarship is the first-year seminar. During her tenure at USC from 1988 to 1999, she served as codirector for research and publications at the National Resource Center for The First-Year Experience and Students in Transition. She also taught University 101 and graduate courses on the first-year experience and the principles of college teaching. She conducts first-year seminar faculty training workshops around the world and is frequently called on to evaluate first-year seminar outcomes. Betsy is codirector and senior scholar in the Policy Center on the First Year of College and Vice President of the John N. Gardner Institute for Excellence in Undergraduate Education both in Brevard, N.C. In her Policy Center role she led a major national research project to identify institutions of excellence in the first college year. She currently works with both two- and four-year campuses in evaluating all components of the first year.

Catherine LaBerta is a Full Professor in the Computer Science/Mathematics Department at Erie Community College in Buffalo, NY.� She is also an adjunct professor at SUNY-Buffalo.� Catherine teaches courses that range from Intro to Computers to Programming in C++ to Web Development.� Originally a math major, Catherine took additional courses in computers and programming and found a field that clicked for her.� She enjoys the constant changes in the computer and related fields as it forces one to keep up and constantly learn.� Not a total book worm, she loves skiing in Purgatory, CO, one of her favorite spots. Book is too overwhelming for starters, MyITLab is a joke

I am a computer professional with over 15 years of experience, and I have reviewed this book for a college class...Catherine goes into detail from the specifics of how a computer works to how technology affects your daily life. Which is a good start for someone who's taking an introductory class that has no experience in computer or whatsoever. However, I feel like she tends to write too much to get to a specific point. I should note that the "bold-ed vocabulary" on each chapter is ridiculously too much. In my opinion, this book CAN be overwhelming for students.

I would rate 3/5 - 2.5/5 stars for the book.

I rated one star on Amazon NOT on the basis of the book, however on the basis of the supplied MyITLab on it. For those don't know, MyITLab is Pearson Education's online module for you to submit assignments...read e-books...and finally testing on book materials.

Now I don't know who made this website, but MyITLab ONLY supports Internet Explorer, which is a pretty disappointing factor. The registration code I was supplied did not enable me to access the e-book despite that I have the physical copy. (Most online modules let you have an e-book and a physical version).

The most important point though, is the automated markings conducted by the online module. Most multiple choice questions (randomly generated from a data bank) have either 2 answers to it or no answers to it at all. They basically force you to choose one and bet your marks against it. I don't know who came up with these, but you can't be serious! I did the multiple choices myself and could only get 70-80%, and I was told the class average was around 50% or below. 70% students were pretty rare. Some questions had confusing wording and I couldn't even understand what the question had asked.

If any instructors want to use this book, go ahead, but PLEASE, do NOT use MyITLab as a source of assignment submission and testing. Create your own questions based on topics in the book.

College students!!!! BEWARE!!!!!

If you do not buy this book at your local campus book store, you will not get the course ID for MYITLab, where you will more than likely suffer the terrible horrors MYITlab. If you do not know what MYITLab is, you are the lucky one, if you are taking a "hybrid/online" class that uses MYITLab. i suggest not and save yourself. And there is a code to sign up onto this myitlab, if you buy this used you do not get the code and must pay 80$ to obtain it. Again i, a college student, do not recommend this. The course of action i do recommend is gather your fellow classmates and write angry letters to your teachers about how much myitlab sucks.

Good book for the introductory computer class

Fourteen chapters, 11th edition, covering everything from input output storage to enterprise computing.
I like the layout of the chapters, the exercises in the end of the chapters. The team projects are
really informative.

The only piece missing is people in the business, such as Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, etc.

I recommend this book to all professors and students.

The book of all books about motivation

I bought this book years ago while on the search for something very different. But because I couldn't find that other book, I took this one. Wow... and I have to say, it has changed my life!!! If you are looking for a down-to-earth, easy-to-read book, this is the one. Paul has a way to show you the way in your life, that is so unique. He speaks to you like a friend would speak to you. Not that scientific, technical terms english, but basic, easy to understand and motivational. The titel says it all. If you want to know how to succeed in life... read this: YOU CAN DO IT!! And you will be able to do it. You should also read the second book he wrote called: Believe and Achieve. It is just as good as this one. You want a book that helps you change your life - this is the one!!!!

Very good book for young adults

Many years ago, I came across this book as a young adult. S$25 was not cheap for a student like myself then. I hang around in the book store for almost an hour reading it, before I decided to invest my whole week of allowance into it. Two decades down the road, looking back, this was probably one of the best 'investment' I made in my younger days. It changes my life dramatically, for the better. Only wish is to have it as a kindle copy so that I can easily refer to it every once in a while, to remind myself of certain things in life.

John Granger is a teacher of classic literature and much-interviewed expert on Harry Potter. His self-published book on Potter received critical praise from such notables as John Warwick Montgomery, considered by many to be our generation's most important apologist for biblical Christianity. Granger lives with his wife and seven children in Port Townsend, Washington.

Forget Madam Pince, go to the Library with John Granger

In his latest contribution to serious Harry Potter scholarship, John Granger takes on the challenge of analyzing the influence of the "great books" upon the wildly popular series. Rather than a tedious "this looks like that" listing, Granger takes the reader on a delightful journey through the many remarkable literary genres that are woven into Harry's adventures. Using the four layers of meaning (surface, moral, allegorical, and anagogical/mythical), Granger delves into a lively, readable analysis that never gets bogged down in literary jargon, but always remains insightful and thought-provoking. The influences he covers range from the fairly obvious ( Dickens, and all those sympathetic orphans! Austen, and all those surprise endings!) to the more obscure but equally relevant (Sayers's detective novels, Gothic stories whose influence actually puts Harry in a role usually given to heroines).

Summary is used sparingly but effectively. Even "literature geeks" who have read all these books and written papers on them will not find these sections tedious, and they may find handy reminders. Granger frequently unlocks useful insights with his characteristically friendly and accessible "voice." Readers familiar with Granger will not be surprised to see points on alchemy and on Rowling's unique twists on post-modernism, but those who have not read Granger's other works may now be tempted to go further into his work, like the Deathly Hallows Lectures, after getting hints of those topics here.

The text is well documented with readable apparatus, but an index would be nice. This is a valuable addition for any bookshelf of Potter studies, appealing both for novice readers and serious literature geeks. The text will not only help Potter readers to learn more about Rowling's world, but may very well be the key to lead them to read and enjoy the contents of the "compost heap" of literature that influenced Rowling; they may even find this book a safe path into the sometimes intimidating world of literary criticism. Don't worry about the Restricted section; the whole library is a wide-open wonderland with Harry and John Granger.

The Great Books That Stand Behind Harry

In Harry Potter's Bookshelf, John Granger provides an insightful tour through the literary influences that helped to shape the Harry Potter books. He looks at ten literary genres with representative books and authors that he believes were part of the rich mental "compost" from which Harry Potter grew.

But this book does much more than pay respects to Rowling's excellent artistry in "rowling" together various genres, themes and ideas. It teaches us to think about what it means to be good readers, of Harry Potter and of countless other great books, and what it means to let our experience as readers change us. In his forthright, non-jargony writing style, Granger provides HP enthusiasts with teaching on symbolist literature and how it can and should be profitably read on four levels: the surface, moral, allegorical, and anagogical levels. He explains how this kind of reading, which used to be commonplace, is rarely now understood. And he looks at the Harry Potter books, in light of the great books that came before them, on all four of these levels.

If you've never deeply considered Harry Potter's literary family tree, which includes Dickens, Austen, Bronte, Stoker, Shakespeare, Swift, Chaucer, Goudge and Lewis, you will find much literary food for thought in this excellent guidebook. If I had to choose favorites, the chapters on Gothic elements in Harry Potter (Snape as Heathcliff and Harry as gothic "hero/ine") and on the alchemical scaffolding of the HP books are especially golden, but there is much to mine in every single chapter as we consider the amazing artistry of Rowling the postmodern symbolist.

I have no doubt that teachers wanting to mine the literary riches of Harry Potter with their students will be especially delighted with this book. Readers already familiar with Granger's work will find these ten chapters an excellent distillation of some of his most important teaching on narrative voice, postmodern literary characteristics, the hero's journey, literary alchemy and more. If these themes and Granger's work are new to you, I encourage you to step from the chapters you find fascinating here into some of his earlier books, especially "How Harry Cast His Spell," and "The Deathly Hallows Lectures."

These keys assist a reader in discerning the four levels of meaning contained in the Harry Potter series, but also will assist a reader in appreciating all great English literature.
