One of those rare times that the hope, the hype and the harvest actually align!
By Jason Goldberg
Like nearly every other Steve Chandler book I own, when I am finished reading it for the first time it is physically unrecognizable due to the folded pages (I have a system where small insights get a dog-ear and BIG insights get a half-page fold and this one is lousy with half-page folds), handwritten notes, arrows, circles and highlights!

As per usual, the humor, impact and power of Crazy Good is surpassed only by its simplicity. A book of choices, a book of distinctions, a book that doesn't have to teach or preach anything complex or statistically significant in order to change our lives by reading it.

I somehow found myself both excited and relaxed at the same time while reading Crazy Good - because the choices showed me possibilities without adding any pressure that I HAD to make all of the choices now.

I have already gotten so much from Steve's books and what Crazy Good has provided is another reminder of the power I already possess to make good (I mean CRAZY GOOD) choices in my life.

One visual that really stuck with me was the metaphor of the lamp and the self-criticism. I won't ruin it if you haven't read it, but that one has been playing on repeat in my head ever since I first read it!

Thank you Steve for another masterpiece; for sharing a piece of your mastery.

If you're looking to go from a kinda-sorta-alright life to a fired up, crazy-good awesome one, I think you'll love this book.
By Brian Johnson
[[VIDEOID:d75b5546f9d995ed089187e8fc871db6]] "There is bad and there is good . . . And then there is crazy good.

Crazy good is something that goes far beyond expectation that you've got goosebumps on your arms when you see it.

So imagine what it feels like to live it.

Most people (myself included, for most of my life) just ping-pong between bad and good. We are bad at something, and then we are good at something. And when we ping-pong over to good, it isn't even that good. We see it as fairly good, and most often it's just barely good enough.

But it never wakes the world up.

The world wakes up from something so much better than it needs to be. That's when the flash of astonishment goes up and down our spine."

~ Steve Chandler from Crazy Good

I love Steve Chandler. And I love his new book.

After interviewing Steve several years ago, we instantly hit it off and began working together immediately. He coached me for two years and has been one of THE biggest (positive) influence in my life.

Steve integrates everyone from Ken Wilber and Nathaniel Branden to Byron Katie and Alan Watts in a SUPER practical way and with an incredibly funny, self-deprecating style.

He's a former suicidal alcoholic (!) who realized that he had a CHOICE about how he would live the rest of his life. And that's what this book is all about: The CHOICES we make on a day-to-day basis that determine our destiny. Steve walks us thru 15 of them.

As a guy with a father who struggled with alcohol and a grandfather who struggled with alcohol + killed himself (not to mention as a guy with my OWN past struggles with feeling lost and hopeless), I, like so many others, find Steve's hero's journey extraordinarily inspiring. As he says, if HE can get to where he is, we all can.

If you're looking to go from a kinda-sorta-alright life to a fired up, crazy-good awesome one, I think you'll love this book. It's PACKED with Big Ideas. Short little mini-chapters full of goodness.

Here's to going from good to CRAZY GOOD!

Two Old Women: An Alaska Legend of Betrayal, Courage, and Survival - 20th Anniversary Edition, by Velma Wallis

Based on an Athabascan legend passed along from mother to daughter for many generations on the upper Yukon River in Alaska, this is the tragic and shocking story--with a surprise ending--of two elderly women abandoned by a migrating tribe that faces starvation brought on by unusually harsh Arctic weather and a shortage of fish and game. The story of survival is told with suspense by Velma Wallis, whose subject matter challenges the taboos of her past. Yet, her themes are modern--empowerment of women, the graying of America, Native American ways.

Twenty years after its first publication, TWO OLD WOMEN continues to be a publishing phenomenon, despite scant national publicity. This word-of-mouth book has been translated into seventeen languages, selling more than 1.5 million copies. --

Includes new introduction by the author, new afterword by the editor, and a discussion guide for book-group readers.

From Publishers Weekly
This novel of two Native American women abandoned by their tribe in the Alaskan Yukon won the 1993 Western State Book award.
Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up-Velma Wallis adapted her prize-winning book (HarperPerennial, 1993) from a tale she first heard from her mother, an Athabascan Indian in the Alaskan Yukon. Its transition into audio format is impressive: taken from oral tradition, it's tellable and starkly poetic, while the deep rich voice of narrator Russell Means with his Native American inflections does much to enhance its power and authenticity. The story is compelling. Abandoned by their tribe during a brutal winter famine, two old women are left to perish on their own. Although they've grown used to complaining and letting others do for them, the two resolve not to wait passively for death but to fight against it. With trapping skills they haven't used for years and strengthened by their bond of friendship, the two women survive the winter to ultimately come face to face with the members of their tribe, none of whom has fared as well as they. Utterly convincing in its details and resolution, this will offer listeners in seventh grade and up vivid insight into a Native American culture. At the same time, it rises above the particulars of time and place to become a metaphor with a message or inspiration not only for students, women or the elderly, but for all members of the human race.
Carol Katz, Harrison Public Library, NY
Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Growing up Gwich'in (one of the 11 distinct ethnic peoples of Alaska) in Fort Yukon, closer to the Arctic Circle than Fairbanks, Wallis had been hearing all her life the legend of the two old women abandoned to die by their starving tribe. Their own children abetted the cruel (not, incidentally, just to Western civilization) tribal decision. Wallis' rendition in serviceable prose of this culturally famous story is somewhere between translation and what is sometimes called re-creation. The tale (which has a happy ending) deserves a place in every regional collection but has a greater appeal, too. Roland Wulbert

Gentle easy to read timeless tale great for grandma's bday
By Joyce Schwarz
This is a wonderful book -- fairly short and a great gift for grandma. It tells how age does give us wisdom. A nice birthday book for anyone over 30. And especially for someone in their 50's and above. Grandma will love it. Why don't we cherish the seniors in our lives? The author Velma Wallis is one of a family of 13 children born in the fur-trapping Fort Yukon Alaska raised in the Athabaskan values. She wrote her book at 33 in a simple yet polished style. Two Old Women have a life of their own. It's a wonderful Alaskan legend that would make a good movie. Fabulous for a reading group or to read aloud to your older children night by night in the winter. Or to your husband in front of the fire....great vacation reading too. Don't miss it-- just caught it by accident-- hope you do too.

Simple really is profound
By John Keating
As a teacher, I appreciate a book that can be read by any student at any age level. The life lessons taught in this tribal legend are timeless. The story unfolds begging the question of the needs of the many outweighing the needs of the few or the one(Star Trek: The Wrath of Kahn).

The chief of the tribe must make choices - difficult ones at that. The conditions are harsh, the two old women have been using their age as a tool to get the younger tribe members to serve their whims - they even fake some physical maladies to play upon the Peoples' compassion. This, it turns out, backfires on them. The chief makes the decision to banish them from the tribe to serve the needs of the trible. He is concerned that the women will bring the tribe down.

There are times when people in charge have to make decisions that are unpleasant - this is a reality.

The women are left to fend for themselves and the tribe moves on. The issues of family, societal expectations, and betrayal loom heavily in the reader's mind.

It brings about the discussion of modern society's obsession with youth and our disdain for those who are aged. Our nation's homes for the elderly are brimming - this book speaks to that issue. Getting old does not mean useless!

The women call upon lessons learned in youth to survive. They also discover that they need each other in more ways than one.

While the book is an easy read-don't let that mislead you into thinking it is not sophisticated fare. The life-lessons taught are important for everyone to learn and take to heart. I am astounded by this book! It gets my highest recommendation. Buy it-read it-learn from it.

This is a wonderful book for thoughtful discussions on peaceful so-existance
By CrzGzr
I love this story. It is a wonderful lesson for everyone. In every conflict there is more than one person. The community in the book lives on in harsh conditions and everyone has to be in harmony for everyone to survive. When the animosity between two women becomes too disruptive, they are given a punishment and to survive they need to come together. One woman is the obvious villain but the other has to learn to accept her role in the conflict. On the surface, she appears innocent but after careful consideration, her flaws emerge. She never once tried to defuse the situation or help the other woman. This is a wonderful book for discussion.

Belladonna Johnson can see ghosts. It's a trait she's inherited from her mother's side of the family, like blue eyes or straight hair. And it's a trait she could do without, because what twelve-year-old wants to be caught talking to someone invisible?

It is convenient, though, after Belladonna's parents are killed in a car accident. They can live with her the same as always, watching the same old TV shows in their same old house. Nothing has changed . . . until everything changes.

One night, with no warning, they vanish into thin air—along with every other ghost in the world. It's what some people think ghosts are supposed to do, but Belladonna knows it's all wrong. They may not be living, but they're not supposed to be gone.

With the help of her classmate Steve, a master of sneaking and spying, Belladonna is left to uncover what's become of the spirits and to navigate a whole world her parents have kept well-hidden. If she can't find her way, she'll lose them again—this time for good.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5–7—Belladonna Johnson, 12, who has the family trait of seeing ghosts, appreciates the gift after her parents' car accident. They happily haunt the house, her mother still prepares meals, Belladonna still spends evenings watching Staunchly Springs with them, and her daily chore is to pick up a newspaper for her father. But suddenly ghosts start to disappear, including her parents. Elsie Blaine, the young Victorian ghost that haunts Belladonna's school, is the only one around, and even Steve, her mischievous chemistry lab partner, can see her. He becomes Belladonna's amusing sidekick on a quest to discover the truth. In the Land of the Dead, they meet strange Dr. Ashe and discover that he has something to do with the disappearances. Magical creatures, amulets, and verses are all a part of this delightful tale that leads Belladonna and Steve on a deadly adventure. Stringer maintains the humor and logic of preteens who are awkwardly coming into their magical destinies, which makes for an amusing first novel.—Nancy D. Tolson, Mitchell College, New London, CT END

Review

“Wry wit and derring-do add up to a great read.”—Kirkus Reviews

“Stringer debuts with an adventurous, darkly humorous ghost story. …Stringer's ability to build a strong sense of mystery, entwined with Western mythology, will pull readers through to the end. Those who like unusual ghost stories without the usual horror will enjoy this book.”—Publishers Weekly

“Stringer maintains the humor and logic of preteens who are awkwardly coming into their magical destinies, which makes for an amusing first novel.”—School Library Journal

“Readers will fear for and cheer for Belladonna Johnson, the hero of this brilliant has-it-all novel, as she tries to solve the mystery behind the disappearance of the world’s ghosts. One of the year’s best.”—Cookie magazine“Stringer’s charming ghost story defies classification. …A fast-paced plot and intricate world pull the reader along, but it’s Bella’s love for her parents and her need to keep them with her that linger”—Booklist“This charming debut novel blends classic British fantasy with figures usually reserved for horror stories to create a compelling fantasy adventure romp which will appeal to middle grades readers. …this book is sure to hook readers and leave them waiting for what must certainly be a sequel, if not a whole series”— VOYA

Definitely a cut above.
By H8er0h8
First let me say I am NOT into YA fiction as a rule. Second, I am really starting to tire of the genre that simply rides Harry Potter's coattails. Thankfully, this was far from it. A beautifully fleshed out universe, an original take on our world and the next, and fantastic use of historical reference (namely, the alchemists of yore). None of the characters were annoying (a rarity in this genre!), rather each were a delight to follow through the story. Lastly, I thank the author for never insulting my intelligence with neither cliches nor ham-handedness. I am very much looking forward to the sequel.

If you like Madeleine L'Engle, you will no doubt enjoy this book.

Spellbinding!
By Alexia
This was a cute book that I read in a few hours, as I didn't want to set it down. Belladonna makes a good heroine, and I enjoyed her growing friendship with Steve and how they learned to work together. They were joined in their adventure by Elsie, one of the few remaining ghosts left.

One minor thing that annoyed me is how almost every child in YA fiction would rather jump into the deep end rather than ask adults for help. Granted, Belladonna's grandmother and aunt kept blowing her off when she tried to talk to them, but I'm sure they would have listened had she told them the important information!

I did like that Belladonna, Steve, and Elsie did not have all the answers and seemed like believable 12 year olds, getting cranky when things didn't work out and bickering at each other when they were frustrated and tired. Even though Elsie was a ghost, she was still a girl and I enjoyed the trio's growing friendship.

Gave this one a 4/5 rating as I enjoyed the story, liked the characters, and thought that overall it was well done. There were a few references I'm not sure the 9-12 age group would understand (Paladin, the Wild Hunt, oracles, etc.) but they can always check online. I'm looking forward to a sequel, as Ms. Stringer left the ending open enough for another adventure! If you enjoy YA books at all, I recommend this one!

Congratulations. You Just Found a Hidden Gem
By Pop Bop
If you walk into any bookstore with a decent independent reader/ya section you find more or less the same selection: Garth Nix (Keys to the Kingdom series, Seventh Tower series, Troubletwister series), Rick Riordan (Percy Jackson, the Kane Chronicles), Flanagan (Ranger's Apprentice series), Delaney (Spook's Apprentice series), Harry Potter, Mull (Fablehaven books), and a smattering of others. You are not likely to find this book or its sequel. Don't really know why. Luckily, you have now found it here.

Belladonna Johnson sees ghosts, just like her Mom did, and her Aunt and grandmother do. In fact, she lives "alone" with her recently deceased Mom and Dad. Problem is, "the doors are closing" and her family, and all the ghosts she usually encounters, are disappearing. Something very serious is wrong, and something will have to be done about it.

There's no point in describing the plot much further, because that is not what makes this book so appealing. The appeal is that this book is remarkably well written. The characters are sharp, distinct and memorable. The descriptions are crisp and clever, and never overwrought or artsy or amateurish. The book can be creepy, or exciting, or scary, or funny, and it's always appropriate and never overdone.

The book is reminiscent of Eva Ibbotson, whose asides could be a little too coy, but who invariably brought a certain zest to the storytelling. That's what you get here.

And the big bonus is the heroine. She is smart and observant. She is also a tween girl, and you get a taste of that as well. Her sidekick, Steve, is also a strong character in his own right, so you don't get a one-note or "girl's book" vibe as you read. The overall effect is cheerful, sometimes wickedly funny, and exciting. Can't ask for much more than that.

Simple to read and learn; Well structured book
By MyPenName
This book is lead authored by someone who is not a native Korean speaker. Hence, the book's contents is structured in such a way that a beginner is not going to be intimidated on seeing the letters of the Korean language. Generally, Asian languages are hard to learn if one is not native to the region. The reason I give 5 stars to this book is because, within a reading a few chapters and reaching half the book, one can read and write a few words in Korean. The book is that simple to read and easy to learn. This shows that the authors clearly know the challenges a beginner faces and hence they have simplified the learning process while still making it effective and enjoyable. The book teaches the language without complicating it and uses small and simple words used in daily life to show how a same letter can be used in different ways. There are practice exercises to test one's understanding and the Korean letters are typed in a very large font which is easy to remember. In short, this book is a great companion in your backpack and is fun to read during travels. :)

Overall, for non Korean speakers, this is a fantastic and extremely simple book to start and appreciate the language!

Lovely, Yet Frustrating
By Amazon Customer
I was thrilled to receive this book until I got to the overview of Hangeul. I thought why tell me about placement and pronunciation of the consonants and vowels if I don't have a clue as to what the consonants and vowels are. As well as, I was unsure as to how to pronounce each consonant and vowel.

I truly desire to learn Korean. To me, it is a very beautiful language. I love that the book has other ways of writing Hangeul so that you are able to understand regardless of what you're reading. I'm not giving up. This IS a really good book, I just think the arrangement needs work or maybe I need to understand the way Hangeul is supposed to be learned. AGAIN, this is a really good book, I just became frustrated with it at a certain point.

I also loved that there was a history about the language as well as examples for most items for learning. I will recommend this book to others because it is very helpful.

Overall, for non Korean speakers, this is a fantastic and extremely simple book to start and appreciate the language!

Reviews
Immensely practical! I used Book 1 & 2 for a Grad Level Teaching the Bible course I taught at Oral Robert University. I had the students make PowerPoint presentations based upon these texts which they could later use for teacher training in ministry. Great material, Dr. Simon! The books include good application exercises as well.

Great Book! We used this book in our Sunday Bible School Conference last year. It contains a wealth of information for Bible Teachers.

I've known for years that "just teaching truth" was not enough. But it was not until I read this series that I was able to help teachers understand how critical it was. This two book series is Biblical, practical, & understandable. It now is the foundation of our teacher development ministry at our church.

Two principles stand out as priceless to me. First, the 'sticky proverb' works great because it is like the sticky notes everyone uses to remind them of important things. The proverb acts like a sticky note for the mind, & it will get to the heart.

Second, Teaching more by teaching less. Being 76 years old, & having been saved since age 13; I have heard mostly informational teaching, & it doesn't do much for me. I always have to step back from it & find one point that I can remember that I need. That is my reaction, & my education includes a Bachelor of Theology.

I shared those two principles with my pastor, & to my surprise, he employed them in his next teaching session. Comments I heard were: "The best he has ever taught; that was a fantastic lesson; he really gave me something I can hang on to."
Bois D. Cuneio
Way of the Cross Baptist Church

----

The two "Teaching Them To Obey" books are the best I've seen in explaining why our teaching needs to be transformational, rather than informational. Beyond that, Dr. Simon explains, in very clear & practical terms, exactly how to prepare a lesson that is biblically accurate & reaches learners' hearts as well as their minds in order to create & grow disciples of Christ. I can't wait to share this with the rest of our teachers. I am convinced it will transform our teaching!

Beyond the Border: A New Age in Latin American Women's Fiction, by Nora Erro-Peralta

This series seeks to stimulate critical perspectives on diaspora processes in the New World. Representations of "race" and ethnicity, the origins and consequences of nationalism, migratory streams and the advent of transnationalism, the dialectics of "homelands" and diasporas, trade networks, gender relations in immigrant communities, the politics of displacement and exile, and the utilization of the past to serve the present are among the phenomena addressed by original, provocative research in disciplines such as anthropology, history, political science, and sociology. This collection of 15 vibrant short stories showcases a rich and important body of fiction by Latin American women, including acclaimed writers such as Isabel Allende and Luisa Valenzuela as well as dynamic new voices. Ranging across boundaries of geography and gender, the stories deal with a variety of subjects -- incest, race, politics, sexual needs, love, old age, and child abuse -- and incorporate a variety of narrative forms. This edition features a new foreword by the celebrated Mexican author Elena Poniatowska, a new story by Nelida Pinon, winner of the prestigious Rulfo Award, and a new critical introduction that highlights the history of Latin American women's writing from the 16th century to the present. Also included are a commentary on each story, biographical sketches of each author, and an updated annotated bibliography of Latin American women writers.

From Publishers Weekly
This collection of short fiction by contemporary Latin American women concerns travel "beyond the border" in two senses. It presents work by writers who, with the exception of Isabel Allende and Luisa Valenzuela, are largely unknown to English-language readers. In addition, its strongest stories deal with characters propelled beyond the boundaries of familiar experience. In "A Passion for Donna Summer" by Dominican Aida Cartagena Portalatin, the voice of the '70s disco diva exhorts a black girl to abandon her Catholic boarding school. She does, only to make the bitter discovery that her will to freedom, like Summer's music, is subverted by the strictures of a racist society. The narrator in Uruguayan Sylvia Lago's heartbreaking "Homelife" recounts how her husband's involvement with the mysterious Felipe ends in the destruction of her family and drives her from nearly everything she knows. These works set a high standard which, unfortunately, not all the pieces meet. Nevertheless, in collecting the stories and supplying bibliographies on the authors, the editors--academics in the field of Hispanic and Latin American studies--have made a valuable contribution.

From Library Journal
Contemporary Latin American women writers are finally gaining their due among North American readers. This excellent collection, which continues the work of Celia Correas de Zapata's Short Stories by Latin American Women (LJ 5/15/90), includes 14 short stories by 14 writers. Some, such as Isabel Allende, Luisa Valenzuela, and Rima Valbona, will be known to many readers; others, such as Aida Cartagena Portalin and Gloria Stolk, may be new. There is an extremely useful individual bibliography for each writer, including critical works in both English and Spanish; the anthology concludes with a comprehensive bibliography of the Latin American feminist short story. For another book on Hispanic writers, see Puerto Rican Writers at Home in the USA , reviewed in this issue, p. 83.--Ed.

Beyond the Border
By Jenny Setterlund
This collection of short stories, edited by Nora Erro-Peralta and Caridad Silva and first published in 1991, provides varying perspectives on the feminine experience in Latin America. Some stories, such as Isabel Allende's "The Judges Wife", give a more typical view of life in Latin America without really challenging the status quo. Other stories, such as Rosario Ferre's "Mercedes-Benz 220SL", are sharply critical and experiment with form in order to aid in conveying their message. These stories show how women of Latin America get locked into specific roles based on patriarchal attitudes and often challenge the basis of these attitudes. One role that is portrayed in several of these stories, including "The Wedding" by Lucia Fox and "Homelife" by Sylvia Lago, is that of the mother. The repetition of the use of this role displays its significance in Latin American culture. One of the most important and interesting aspects of this book is the way in which it provides a wide range of female experiences.
I gave this book four stars because not only do these stories have a valuable message to convey to their readers, they are also completely enjoyable to read. If you are looking for a book that will carry you through many different settings, tell you stories of women from a variety of backgrounds, and keep you enthralled throughout, this is definitely a book you should read.

Beyond the Border
By Leslie Bartusiak
Beyond the Border, a collection of short stories by number of Latin American women authors, is an excellent source of hints to the culture of Latin America. I was very fortunate to read a number of short stories from this book for my Women's Culture from Latin America class at ISU in Normal, IL. After some time of study of Latin America's culture, I was able to get more meaning out of what I read. For example, the short story Mercedes-Benz 220SL, by Rosario Ferre, tells the story that teaches us about the impact of patriarchy and materialism on the family. Ferre uses punctuation, narriation, reoccurring themes, and imagery to paint a picture of the role of men and women in Latin America. Another short story, The Wedding, by Lucia Fox, takes the reader through the thoughts of a friend of the bride, who doesn't seem to be a clueless as everyone else. She points out how her friends fall blindly into typical female roles found in Latin American culture. In this story, Fox uses flashbacks and imagery to leave a lot of room for interpretation. The reader is forced to use their creativity to create their own interpretation. These two stories are just examples of the powerful stories found in the book. I highly recomend Beyond the Border to those both fammiliar and umfammiliar with Latin American culture.

Beyond the Border
By Angelica Delatorre
Beyond the Border: A New Age in Latin American Women's Fiction is a fascinated book that includes many short stories from well known Latin American women writers such as Isabel Allende, Rosario Ferr, Ada Cartagena Portalatn to Elena Poniantowska. This book of short stories first appeared in 1991 and has many great reasons in which I rate it four stars. First and most importanly, is that this book is published by women writers who have suffered for many years to get their work acknowledged. Second, this book gives an overview on diverse themes in Latin America. Some in which touch base on partriarchy, materialism, gender roles, motherhood, and much more. Lastly, these short fiction stories also offer a great interest in symbolism, tone, imagery, sound and rhythm.
Therefore, I suggest if YOU want to learn more about the Latin American culture, writers, or themes such as patriarchy, self-expression, love, marriage, and much more PLEASE READ THESE SHORT STORIES. I promise that these short stories will take you into a great adventure and are a worthwhile experience.
