Pretty good, has some faults

On my quest to find an Android book that i like, i signed up for a Safari Books trial and read the first chapter of this book. So, this is a review of just the first chapter.

Happy about:

Starts projects with story boarding
Expects you to remember (or go back) to what was learned before to gain skill
Uses more than one orientation (to show how it works)
Uses more than one resolution (to show how it works)
Lots of images
Very clear steps
Expresses what is being done before doing it, in some cases
Explains again when listing the steps

Not so happy about:

Images and some instructions are out of date already (All Android books are plagued by this)
Doesn't look like a technical reviewer did a final check on the text
Some things are explained as they are being done (as opposed to beforehand)
Expected experience of reader seems to switch back and forth
Title is a bit of a misnomer
Expensive

I have mixed feelings over this book. First, it is very expensive. The publishers includes some online help, which, iiuc, is the digital book for 2 years (at which point the book will be woefully out of date) and some other things, which they list for about $50. If you subtract $50 from the price here, it becomes more reasonable for a very detailed hardcover book. Although, The ebook is nearly as expensive, which hardly seems justified.

Most of the book is both fine and clear, but little things just pop out here and there, and i'm just talking about the first chapter. They're insignificant on their own, but i think they ought to be noted. For example, in figures that are broken into multiple images, line numbers in the gutter switch from right justified to left justified. The wrong figure (figure 1-68) is referred to. The code download is missing some images and its not clear that the same images from another directory are to be used. Not much, but a technical reviewer should have caught this. Regardless, the overwhelmingly majority (and then some) of text is very clear.

The layout seems nice (i changed the width in Safari Books to use more of the page.) Steps are clearly boxed, and many images are referred to so you do not get lost. Some steps have changed because of later releases of Android, but nothing you can't figure out easily. Things are explained at length, starting with story boarding the project to show what will be done, and the author explains, quickly, that this is important. Ten points for that one. It so often is left unsaid. There doesn't seem to be any pseudo code, though. :)

I could not tell what level of expertise the author is targeting. The book seems to address people who are somewhat familiar with programming but want a walk through (with some hand holding) as the preview the uncharted wild terrain of Android. Then sometimes, there's too much detail. And then sometimes, things are reviewed too quickly. It's just a feeling. I get used to a book's method, and then don't think much about it. Here i kept thinking about it. That's all. Regardless, it's still good. It's not like anything is painfully explained or missing.

I really want a book that explains concepts. One that explains what will be done before it does it, while it does it, and perhaps even after it does it. Following step by step instructions without knowing the whole picture ahead of time is both confusing and boring. The book explains some concepts ahead of time, but some in the middle of doing it. (This is a legitimate method, so not too much is explained before doing anything. It's just not my preferred method.) Concepts explained ahead of time are repeated while going through the steps. That got me excited, and if that was done every time, i would love the book. Perhaps Instead of Android Programming Concepts, it should be named, Android Programming: A Step By Step Guide with Concepts. Well, that's ugly. But i think the current title is a bit (just a little) of a misnomer.

I'm off to check another book. If i can't find one, i would easily consider this a candidate despite its slight faults. If you are looking for a book on Android, and don't want to rush but rather understand what's going on, you probably want to look at this book. It is nicely written and explains a great deal.

The files needed to work through the book appear to be gone.

The book itself is pretty good. However, the exercises depend on graphics files. I can't locate the files anywhere. They give an address in the preface. If you go to that address it says the images are in the "Instructor Resources." I happen to be an instructor and so I registered and got access to the folder. However the images are not there. It would be kind of crazy locking the images away in a folder that isn't available to everyone. I wonder if there was a copyright problem or something that caused the authors to take down the images.

When in 1937 J. R. R. Tolkien laid aside The Silmarillion, the extension of his original mythology into later Ages of the world had scarcely emerged. Tolkien himself noted that he knew nothing of the peoples and history of these Ages until he "met them on the way". It was in the appendices to The Lord of the Rings that there emerged a comprehensive historical structure and chronology of the Second and Third Ages, embracing all the diverse strands that came together in The War of the Ring. Tolkien's difficulty - bordering on despair - in providing these appendices, leading to delay in the publication of The Return of the King, is well known. In The Peoples of Middle-earth, however, Christopher Tolkien shows that the work had in fact been achieved years before, in essays and records differing greatly from the published forms. A number of other writings by J. R. R. Tolkien are also included in this book; they derive chiefly from his last years, when new insights and constructions freely arose as he pondered the history that he had created.

Indispensable for Tolkien fans & anyone who loves the English language

The last, & IMHO the best, of the "History of Middle-Earth" series. The full 12-volume "History" is actually a collection of Tolkien's writings (first, second & even subsequent drafts, marginalia, comments & expansions, etc.) pertaining to his published tales - in this instance, the Prologue & Appendices to "The Lord of the Rings," as well as some additional materials connected to "The Silmarillion." Painstakingly & lovingly assembled by his son Christopher, this volume includes Tolkien's own extensive notes on languages & characters' names & histories that were omitted (for reasons of space) from LOTR. J.R.R. Tolkien was a brilliant philologist, & his deep understanding & love of the English language in general, & ancient English in particular, permeates his work. He was also extremely, almost fanatically, conscientious about ensuring that his mythology, once in print, remained internally consistent. (A whole chapter is dedicated to "The Problem of 'Ros'" - a suffix found in names such as Elros & Cair Andros - when Tolkien was creating his Sindarin & Adunaic languages.) Full of insights into the mind of a brilliantly imaginative writer. I took an almost physical delight in this book.

Excellent source for Middle-earth character background

Well, ahem, how would I describe the plot of this book? Err, um... heh. I can't! But that doesn't matter. If you love the characters of Middle-earth, this book reveals so much of the rich history that Tolkien created. I absolutely love it for referring to his languages, character names, and background character stories. I also find it very interesting to read Tolkien's early drafts. I appreciate the commentary by Christopher Tolkien that clarifies it.

Love this series to the stars and back

I love, love, love the Grisha trilogy so far. I started with 6 of crows and then started this series of hers afterwards... so good. I read a lot of reviews and many people were complaining about Alina and saying that she was vain... I don't see that at all. I see her as a fierce heroine who also is human, and has her insecurities. I love her as a character; I think she's feisty and strong of heart and well, I find myself in her. I love her as a character.

I also really really love the Darkling as a nemesis. *spoiler alert* If this were my own life, I would pick Mal all the way (obvi, since he's the only non-psychotic love interest in the story) HOWEVER.... given that this is a fantasy novel....I wish she will end up with the Darkling. Is that super messed up??? I just keep waiting for it all to be an elaborate play, that Ragda made it all up, that he never did all these terrible things... tho... as the series progresses that seems, admittedly, more and more unlikely. Tho I do think that maybe all these shadow soldiers and growing darkness in him could have been from finding his one and only counterpart and then watching her leave him, multiple times, for another dude and try to kill him several more? I mean, maybe he does have a really great plan for how to save all of Ravka. Alina just sort of assumed that it was all for selfish power gain. She's never even had a real conversation with the guy about it, she's too busy being repulsed and trying to kill him. I mean, he did massacre a city, and try several times to kill the love of her life, which is pretty f***ed up but still.... I like to think there is some good in the Darkling. I guess I'm just an optimist that way. I guess I just love the villains. It's fine. You can judge me. ^-^

Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo is the second book in the Grisha Trilogy. Mal and Alina escape from the Darkling and are trying to earn enough money to travel to a place where no one has heard of the Grisha. Before they can move on, the Darkling finds them again. The White Stag captured in the first book was only the first of the amplifiers the Darkling wants. He is now after the Sea Whip. The crew is overthrown by a privateer who rescues Mal and Alina from the Darkling, just as the Sea Whip is captured and killed. Alina now has a second amplifier and reads a story about a third one, the Firebird. The privateer, Sturmhond, has many tricks and secrets up his sleeve. While Alina is put in charge of the Second Army with Mal as the Captain of the Guard, the kingdom is searching for the Darkling and preparing for war. Alina learns that the amplifiers were not discovered, but created, which makes their safety more questionable and makes them even more of a mystery. Lives are lost and some are forever changed in the battle with the Darkling. Once again, Leigh Bardugo has entered the Grisha's world with magnificent writing and dynamic characters- 5 stars!

Was not my favorite. But still great writing

So, I really loved Shadow and Bone, I thought it was such a great book. I however, did not love this book. I enjoyed it yes, but I wasn't completely swept off my feet. I loved the introduction of a few new characters. I am growing very attached to one of them, and I am quite nervous about how their story line will play out.

Mal is getting on my nerves, he is acting like a spoiled brat, it's as if now that he has confessed his feelings, Alina should cater to him, and do as he wants. I do not think he likes Alina being the shining star. I may be wrong though. I just don't agree with how he is acting.

The book dragged a bit for me. Those last 100 pages though, were pretty amazing. I wish the whole book had flowed like that. I also really enjoyed the bonus content, and the short story about Genya.

Despite my lack of love for this book, I really still think Leigh's writing is beautiful. I love the world she has built. The story is unique, and enticing, and no one is safe, which I really enjoy. She has a fearless type of writing. And I really appreciate that. I do look forward to finishing this story. Ruin and Rising sounds incredible!
