About the Author
In 1978 his interest in aircraft took Chris Gibson into the Royal Observer Corps where he represented his group, area and country in aircraft recognition competitions between 1980 and 1991. On the standing down of the ROC in 1991, Chris began researching historical aviation and has written several books on un-built projects, particularly guided weapons.

Great background to England's way of coming up with both aircraft and the systems for doing anti-submarine and general maritime patrol work since WWII. And we thought the F-35 program was a bad, long drawn out process. The Brits were way ahead of us!

Nimrod's Genesis is the latest volume in Chris Gibson's series of books for Crecy on RAF projects and weapons. Following on from Vulcan's Hammer (Bombers) and Battle Flight (Fighters), Chris has decided to tackle the less glamorous, less well known subject of maritime patrol.

The book is beautifully put together, the drawings, photos and artwork all first class and reproduced perfectly and the excessive typos of Battle Flight are banished. The text is well written and edited, impeccably researched and reads well. There are loads of projects depicted I was previously unaware of, and the coverage of the various designs for the successive requirements is very complete. Chris covers the weapons and sensors used in maritime patrol and a chapter explaining the submarine threat that the Soviet Navy posed. If you have any interest in the subject of maritime patrol aircraft, I am sure this book will be a delight. I liked the HS.1011/HS.1023 (impractical but cool), and the Maritime Patrol Vulcan was unexpected.

In summary then, a great reference on RAF Maritime Patrol requirements and development, well worth buying. Crecy continue to impress with their releases, and Chris Gibson does a very good job of making a coherent narrative from the source material, not just a "stamp collection" of projects.

Sticking the Maritime Patrol Vulcan on the cover was a great idea - pity there were no MPA TSR.2 projects :)

In conclusion - buy it, its very interesting and deserves to do well.

This book is a specimen of an aviation genre upon which the Brits seem to have a stranglehold: aircraft that never were. The books are enticing because their hallmarks—quality printing, excellent photographic reproduction, integrated design, and numerous line drawings—are focused on capturing the reader's and purchaser's attention. They do this very well. That they are printed in China is more a statement of the cost of similar endeavors in the West than it is of the derived quality in the East.

Unlike historical fiction for things that never were, this category of aviation literature has a very valid substrate: the furtherance of the aeronautical art. Aviation blind alleys can actually lead to hardware. Hence aircraft vaporware is worthy of study and reportage.

The issue with such books is how far to push the defining boundaries. Nimrod's Genesis may be just on the edge. Subtitled “RAF Maritime Patrol Projects and Weapons since 1945,” this is 222 pages of unbridled decadence for the minutiae loving aviation buff. Yes, it is an acquired taste, and on the surface may not appeal to yours. It certainly didn't mine. But author Chris Gibson knows how to reel you in.

The opening chapter isn't even about aircraft. It concisely sets the stage for subsequent chapters by painting a picture of the “enemy,” the Soviet/Russian Navy, and in particular its submarines. This he follows with a chapter on sensors, how they work, the tactics required for each, and weapons used to counter targets. All these are very well illustrated. Explanatory graphics are clear, concise, and informative. The subsequent chapters about the aircraft begin with the end of World War II and flying boat projects and continue through short- and medium-range maritime reconnaissance, long-range land planes, NATO and the so-called Trinity three-in-one project, and continue chronologically to today.

Gibson's writing is focused, there are no distracting side trips into unrelated matters. There is a flow to his work that is easy for the reader to follow and one often leaves a chapter with the thought that “I didn't know that,” or “That makes sense.”

My only criticism with this book—and it applies to the entire genre—is that they tease you with such interesting drawings and sketches and leave you wanting because they are too small to be of real value other than to illustrate a shape.

I would not have gambled on the subject. It is too far removed from my comfort zone. But I would have lost by not picking it up.

Maybe I don't like ducks

This book should not be purchased as a textbook. It quacks more like a lab or exercise manual. Much better choices exist as a textbook such as Discrete Mathematics with Applications. I cannot imagine saving this book for future reference, unless it was for practice problems. The style is very informal and verbose which makes learning for the first time tedious and future review a slog. There are few illustrations, etc. for a visual learner. If you are using this book for computer science, I would again advise another book. While the author states in her introduction she wants to give a "taste of many flavors of discrete mathematics"....by avoiding Big-O notation, treatment of algorithmic efficiency, and finite state automata, she avoids being "computer science focused". Attention professors, while I understand an attempt at balance, this book is inappropriate if the primary consumers (students) are computer science majors.
Perhaps, I am too critical. Maybe I don't like ducks.

If this is your textbook drop the class

This is the worst textbook I have ever had. I had a friend taking discrete math with another instructor using Susanna S. Epp's book and boy was I jealous. All the clear, outlined explanations in Epp's book made me so happy to get some clarity on what Belcastro was trying in vain to explain. Epp's book was organized and followed path building on stuff from previous chapters. It had short self checks in the chapters (DM with Ducks does too, but that's it), and answers to the odd problems in the back. Explanations where given in spaced out, easy to digest chunks. DM with Ducks all examples are crammed together in paragraphs. Epp's proofs look like this

2 x^2 = 4 blah
3 blah blah 2
blah blah 2
blah blah
QED

DM for ducks writes them like this
blah blah x^2 = 4 QUACK blah blah blah 2 (giggle, giggle) QUACK blah blah 2 blah blah QED

You can imagine how frustrating this is when the proofs are complicated and long.

You'll find yourself, and I can think of no better term than this, excavating the examples to dig out the logic buried therein. Also the terminology is introduced in the same manner, new symbols and terms are just imbedded in seas of text, so if you need to quickly go back and refer to something, or refresh your knowledge, you can't. This is just a terrible and scatterbrained text.

DM with Ducks?! How bout less Ducks and more organization and examples? No solutions to the odd problems in the back? C'mon, ESPECIALLY with a class like this, you need to know if you're doing the problems correctly. I can understand the "I don't like just giving answers" and "you gotta work for it" mentalities, I do, I think they're wrong or at least often misguided to draconian ends, but a student needs the tools to do so, this book doesn't clearly provide them. Note that in my headline I said, "...drop the class!" I wasn't kidding. If your professor is subjecting you to this way too wordy, self loving tome of a text book, then they obviously have no clue how to teach. You'll be in a GPA killing world of hurt; best case scenario you get less than a C so you can try again with a professor who knows how to teach. Seriously buckle up for confusing scatter-shot and meandering lectures that lead to tests that will make you think "WTF is this?!" when you take them.

Don't get me wrong, there huge difference between being knowledgeable (this author is definitely that) and being able to impart that knowledge to others. I feel sorry for any student taking a class with this author. I bet she's nice, but I'm sorry, this book is long winded, confusing, and just plain unhelpful. I managed to get through my class, but only with youtube, borrowing my friend's text book and going to office hour after unhelpful office hour. I was one of the lucky ones, I saw too many hard working students, with the calc series and linear algebra under their belts struggle with this god awful text.

I think my biggest complaint (other than the lack of odd numbered solutions which is just dumbfounding), is that the book is laid out like a novel. There are no delimiters between wordy self giggling explanations and examples, just seas of text with an occasional confusing picture thrown in. And for the love of God why doesn't the author put any key concepts, or even just key terms in bold? It's ridiculous, lazy and feels like the author didn't give two shitake's about writing something for a human being to actually be able to learn from. It all just sort of runs together. If you are a visual learner, forget about it, this book will frustrate you to no end. I'd suggest finding a friend in the class, and buying 2 books, this one for the HW problems, and another book by a different author to explain the concepts. It will be much, much quicker.

One more thing, to the author. I feel bad for bashing your book, I can tell you tried hard to do something different, but you have to understand that math is already fun, trying to "make it fun" won't win converts and will only alienate those trying to just make it through. The Ducks and cutsie stuff is fine, but you got to get the basics of laying out a discrete math text down first. Seriously this book feels like one of those old stogy calculus books written in the 50's.

Just lovely

Oh, Mary! How I love you so. This book is as delightful and enriching as any of her other collection of poems. Mary knows nature. She knows presence. She knows how to love her life. She is a genius who never seems to feel the need to be "clever." ("Clever is for cocktail parties" a poetry teacher once told me.) Oliver expresses her wisdom in the purest, clearest, most sacred poems. Whenever I feel down, I read "Why I Wake Early": "Hello sun in my face," I say.

A wonderful collection of poems by Pulitzer Prize winner Mary Oliver.

I admit to not liking most of the contemporary poems and poets I have read in various poem publications and books. Many of the so-called modern free verse poems today are incomprehensible and absolutely meaningless with no purpose except to confuse anyone reading them. The old masters will always remain my favorite poets. However, after reading a recently published Mary Oliver book of poems, which I enjoyed, I decided to read more of her poems. This poetry collection (New and Selected Poems by Mary Oliver) was published in 1992 and includes a large number of her poems created between 1963 and 1992. Her poetry is often beautiful, easy to understand and have real meaning.

This poems in this volume are organized into the years they were written. New poems (1991-1992), from House of light (1990), from Dream work (1986), from American primitive (1983), from Twelve Moons (1979), from The night traveler and Sleeping in the forest (1978 also includes five poems not previously published in any volume), from The river Styx, Ohio and other poems (1972), and from No voyage and other poems (1963-1965). There are so many wonderful poems in this collection that it is difficult to choose any favorite ones, but here is just a small sample of the ones I really liked a lot. When death comes, The waterfall, October, The sea, Wild Geese, Starfish, Sunrise, Lightening, and The first snow.

Inspiring

Many of Mary Oliver’s poems flow with an anthem-like lyricism that often attests to the grandeur and mystery of the natural world. She plays the role of a quiet witness in order to observe and learn what life has to teach: how happiness is possible if you resign yourself to the rapture and beauty of the world around you. She wants to be invested in the glory and energy of nature and understand its holiness, its closeness to God. She loves all flora and fauna and wants to connect to them. Her compassion for life allows her to look upon the world with gratitude and appreciation. The wildness and sheer power and intensity of nature is more than miraculous; it is her source of bliss and strength. She allows the power of the natural world to keep her memory active with visions and dreams of her elemental self becoming one with the universe. Her poetry is an attempt to achieve that union, and few poets can inspire the way she does.

A good current overview of Humanoid evolution with an emphasis on fossils.

These folks know their stuff.

The authors are both prominent anthropologists connected with the Natural History Museum in London. Chris Stringer is a leading anthropologist in more ways than one. Involved since 1970s, he helped develop this field by being among the first: to focus on Modern Human Origins, to bring database analysis to Anthropology and use sophisticated statistical analysis to analyze information “buried” there. He is best known for being a first and leading proponent of “Recently Out of Africa" theory (ROA) for Modern Human origins. (On this he is about as close to the horse’s mouth as you are likely to get).

Peter Andrews was the head of Human Origins at the Museum until he retired. He continued there as a research associate and is a Professor Emeritus, University College, London. He is a noted expert on Miocene Apes and the evolution of primates leading to Human Origins, and is interested in their Paleoecology (ancient habitats and ecology).

LEVEL AND LITERARY QUALITY
So not surprisingly, this book is not the best book to read if it’s your first introduction to the field. But while not at the beginner’s level, it’s only a step up. You will get more out of it if you do read an introductory book like Carl Zimmer’s “Smithsonian Intimate Guide to Human Origins” or Robie Mckie’s “Dawn of Man- The Story Of Human Evolution” (IMHO – better written than Carl’s but more out of date). Both of those books were well written by talented science writers, and are heavily illustrated.

This book’s authors are scientists and the book has just a bit of a academia to it (especially the Miocene apes material). But it was written for the lay-public and it is definitely accessible with even just a little background. They try to avoid scientific jargon for and usually clearly define pretty what they cannot avoid. There is no technical analysis involved, not a bit of math or the like.

Chris is a talented wordsmith. His writing is open and conversational and he knows how to add color and interest to make it engaging. But his writing style also suffers from the downside of conversation – it can ramble and jump around and is prone to run-on sentences and paragraphs.
Dr Andrews is less open and conversational, but his structure is more coherent. On the other hand, both men tend to cross-references -move back and forth.

The publisher is great. Not only did they produce a high quality book, I believe they imposed a format that helps. The material is organized by being broken down into clear readable segments with subtitles. And they use copious illustrations that break up the text that would otherwise run-on. (I have read some other of Chris’s book without this format, and it’s a lot more work). A brilliant move by the publisher.

GRAPHICS
There are numerous illustrations: taking up about half the space of the book. But contrary to one reviewer’s comment’s, they are mostly useful and support the text and add clarify and additional information. There are, however, too many site collection and scenery photos which could be reduced.

The photos and illustrations are mostly high quality (many are colored) which adds to the reading experience. But I am not a fan of the reconstruction scenes. To me that artist’s interpretations tend to look too much alike (between species) and cartoonish - not of the same quality currently available. But some charts are exceptionally good. The species timeline at the front of book is one of the very best I have seen and it helped to stay organized in reading about the species, especially the apes. The land / sea configuration maps on page 100 is not usually seen in introductory books, but helpful. And generally the fossil comparisons are well done.

FOCUS
The book is an up to date (2011-12) overview of the evolution of late primate (especially Miocene Apes) to Modern Human origins. It covers most of the major species of Hominoids. One of the books strongest assets is material on Miocene Apes. Its hard to find such a review, written at this level. The book is worth having for this alone.

It mostly deals with the major fossil species but also describes important collecting sites and gives background on their likely habitats. This has a lot of information and detail packed into its 229 pages (about 115 pages of equivalent text). Most of this information is of a summary nature –the book is a good review of the field, but at the same time, gets into sufficient details on specific aspects of fossils that reveal information about our evolution.

CONTENT
Two other reviewers Vierhout "noord23" and Jerry Saperstein do a good job of summarizing the general content of the book so there is no point of repeating it here.

PROBLEMS
The publisher’s devices help organize the book, but it would help if the writing itself was more organized and coherent. (which is why I initially was going to give it 4 stars). I tried to use the index to overcome the fractured writing but found it to be a minimal ONE. This is a publishing area that could be improved. I also found the illustration credits almost useless.

A criticism on content is that it’s very weak in DNA and genetics – which has made major contributions lately, and is likely to become one of the most important subfields. You are going to have to get this information from more advanced reading. The same can be said about inferring behavior and social organization. While some is present at the end of the book there is much more that can be said about it. On the plus side, much in this area currently is really speculation – which this book does not get into. (Chris Springer's more advanced book: "Lone Survivors....." goes into more detail here but the fractured writing is the same, and the publisher is poor.)

RATING AND VALUE:
Initially I was going to give this 4 stars. But on reflection decided on 5 stars. For the right person, this would be appropriate. This is a very good book for someone who was more informed but hasn’t checked the field for a while and wants to be brought up to date. It’s good for someone who has an introductory level background but wants to begin to gain more advanced background in the area – an ideal transition book. And it’s illustrations, quality and information about Miocene apes and other incidental information make it worthwhile for others.

PLEASE PUBLISH AN UPDATED EDITION!!

This book was last published in 2012. Since then there have been at least two new hominins discovered. So PLEASE PUBLISH AN UPDATED EDITION of this wonderful book!!

Excellent newer interpretation

This book is very god for an introduction to human evolution. The organization allows the reader, especially the novice, to understand the study from fossil excavation to interpretation to classification and relation to modern man. One of the other reviewers did not like all of the photographs, but they are very well done and are important to uderstanding the text.
