A LONG COMPLICATED REVIEW

The classic book on high speed calculation was written by Lester Meyers and titled HIGH SPEED MATH SELF-TAUGHT. I have two copies of the 1961 edition on my paperback shelf since I pick up a copy anytime I see one at a library sale. I got my first copy in sixth grade (true story). There are very few tricks that appear in ANY speed math book that don't also appear in Meyers book. But most of Meyers book is information on what to do in very specific problems (multiplying by 9, multiplying by 36, etc.) Nowadays, people generally want methods that are applicable in a wide variety of situations, not just multiplying by specific numbers.
A good test for one of these books is to see how it deals with division. Division is by far the most difficult operation for kids to learn, and books on speed math are often very short on division methods. Handley's book contains two methods, one of which, as far as I know, only appeared in A. H. Russell's RAPID CALCULATIONS (printed in London, 1956, hard to find.)
Why three stars? The book is very good in teaching what Handley calls the reference number method for multiplication. But I think the average reader would have difficulty following some of the explanations for both division methods. Handley's subtraction method (which he says he was taught in third grade) is excellent - recommended for any parent whose kids are having trouble borrowing. There are other interesting things here(meaning things I have not seen before or not seen in awhile)--an easy way to go from Fanrenheit to Celsius or vice versa, multiplying feet and inches by feet and inches, a quick method for mental square root estimates. But I am not sure the average reader will be able to follow all of Handley's explanations. So, next reviewer, whoever you are, please comment on how easy to follow you found the explanations to be. Maybe I am unnecessarily pessimistic. In any case, despite these reservations, the book is recommended.

The easiest techniques I've seen for mental math

In my day job as an occupational therapist, I often have to work with individuals who, for whatever reason, have problems that impair their ability to solve problems, and cope with everyday life. Traditional methods of teaching arithmetic and problem solving, simply do not work for a significant percentage of people. This has lead me to look for alternatives.

In addition, I have always enjoyed reading about science, statistics, and the related areas, but discovered that without understanding higher mathematics, there is an invisible ceiling, where you won't be able to go beyond. I've made it a priority of mine to improve my mathematics abilities to the point I'll be able to apply to graduate school for training in statistics and/or economics.

Where does this book come in? After all, this isn't REALLY mathematics, but "mere" arithmetic. First, if you are math phobic it will boost your confidence. Within days, you will be able to multiply at least 2 digit numbers up to 100, very easily, in your head. You will be able to square a number like 625 within seconds, and get 390625. You will also learn methods for square roots.

It will get your brain to recognize patterns. If you are the least bit curious, you will wonder why these methods work. You will try to figure out a way to prove, to yourself, that these methods work. This recognition of number patterns, and their proofs, is essentially what algebra--that dreaded high school subject, is all about.

With your improvement in algebra, learning calculus is much easier. Once you figure out calculus, probability and statistics will
be much easier to understand. At that point, there will be no limit on what you can learn on your own.

When I'm studying a subject such as calculus, I will typically warm up by doing a few problems in mental math, from this book, to get in the right frame of mind. I notice that I pick up the material a bit faster when I do this. I've looked at Trachtenberg's very interesting work, but I don't find that I ENJOY using his methods (aside from his written long division method). There are simply too many, what appear to be ad hoc rules. Handley's method is more appealing.

If you are an adult who is preparing for some admission test (GRE, GMAT, etc.), I would recommend studying this book as it will give you an advantage on the quantitative section. This is true even if you use some other test prep, such as Kaplan or Princeton Review.

If you are the parent of a "learning disabled" child who has trouble with basic skills, try these methods out. You might find out that your "disabled" child is really a gifted student who hasn't been provided the environment in which to thrive.

First, a great book. I'm enjoying putting some of these methods to use!

Second, in response to Nehal from 4/7/05:

"But what happens when we want to multiply 13 x 54? In this case, we would like to start out with 10 (for 13) and 50 (for 54) giving us 10 x 50 = 500. In other words, we use 2 Reference Numbers: 10 and 50. Next, we make the corrections from here."

13*54

Use 10 as the reference number for both. Mentally write

+3 +44

over the 13 and 54 respectively.

Gives

54 + 3 = 57, and 57 * 10 = 570

so 570 +

44 * 3 = 120 + 12 = 132

so the answer to 13*54 = 570 + 100 + 32 = 670 + 30 + 2 = 702

Sure, problems in general get more difficult as you stray from the reference number, that's a given, but it is no big deal.

I thought for sure he was a heartless player when I first met him but I quickly figured out that wasn't the case at all.

As soon as I spot the sexy little red head walk in, I've already laid her down and claimed her. Now it's just getting her to realize that, along with all the fuckers who seem to be eye balling her. I soon find out that Kendal is addictive and I need to have my fill of her regularly. How a man before me has never gone that far and claimed Kendal for himself before is beyond me but thank fuck they haven't because Kendal will be completely mine.

3.5 caveman rockstar stars...

This novella was my introduction to the series; however, by some of the reviews I get the impression it wasn't written first. I'm kinda hoping it was written first and the editing will improve in future books. I'm looking forward to digging a little deeper and getting to know the characters better. This was a glimpse into the first meeting of 18 yr old Kendall (who wants to be a hairdresser) and 20 yr old Jax (who wants to be a rockstar). He's already got groupies, but he hasn't hit it big yet. I really enjoyed the chemistry between the couple. Jax is the first man to light Kendall's fire, all the others paled in comparison. But that didn't stop her from thinking he was a douchebag, she tells it like it is and I like that about her. Jax has groupies lined up, he doesn't have to work for female attention, until her... Can the sexy caveman change her mind and convince her to give him a chance?

Beautiful start to an amazing series..

Wow!!! If you like your reads hot and steamy then here's your read..

This novella allows the reader to witness how Jax and Kendal met, go on that beautiful first date and have such an incredible chemistry that explodes into the bedroom.

Each of the characters Leo, max, Rhys are met along with Kendal's friends too, we see their initial worry for Kendal too.

Jax, well he is pure male alpha personified, who has finally met someone to calm his bad boy ways. Kendal isn't after a relationship but can this reformed bad boy change her mind??

You feel part of something special with K T FIshers writing style and I can't wait to read more of her work.... If you do one thing today one click this, you won't regret it!!

Although this was short, it gave me a really good understanding of Jax and Kendal's relationship from the beginning. What was there not to love about either one of them? Kendal has a good head on her shoulders and Jax has met the girl he wants to be the best guy possible for. There's no doubt they are the one for each other. Can't wait to start Rockstar Daddy!

This book lives up to and exceeds all expectations. Kissinger shows us in great detail what his Balance of Power Doctrine is based upon by showing the great diplomat Metternich in all his glory, when the Concert of Europe truly began and the world was restored. Whether you are dealing with Napoleon, Hitler, Stalin, or a tyrannical boss at work, this work contains insights which transcend the period of study. Kissenger basically discusses the problems and politics of building a coalition, proving a tyrant to be a tyrant, and finally how to construct a political enduring peace.

I recommend the book whole-heartedly. His writing is insightful, full of preternatural wisdom and of enduring value. I especially liked how he dissected the personalities of the actors in this play, Napoleon, Metternich, Castlereagh, and Talleyrand, and the manner in which he highlights that those personalities influenced the course of history. You will come away with a deep understanding of politics at all levels and also why Kissinger dominated the diplomacy of his period.

The Past Keeps Repeating Itself

Excellent book that is hard to find and one that should never go out of print. This book first came out in the early 1960's and sadly was not reprinted until the early part of the 21st century and it is now out of print once again. The world of Metternich and Castlereagh was one of finding peace, keeping your country strong while keeping the young aristocrats and military professionals from starting wars. Bismark ran into much the same problems when he was Chancellor of Prussia. The key to Metternich, Castlereagh and Bismark was diplomacy based on strength and cunning. When those that came after them saw diplomacy as weakness and opted for war, then eventually their empires came to an end. We saw the same problems in the Bush 43 administration; hence two wars that contiune to drain the economy and deplete the nation of young men and women who go off to war and die or are injured, not to mention the strained relations around the world. The outcome is a weakening of the nation state and eventual ruin. The empires of Britian, Austria and Prussia all ceased to exist when they threw diplomacy to the wind. Can the US escape the same circumstances by rebuilding diplomacy while maintining our military strength but not using it to go to war? Much like Sun Tzu's 'Art of War,' Kissinger's 'The World Restored' should be read by politicans, military professionals, business folks and the general populace at large. Democracy is based on conversation and no better way to have a conversation about history and diplomacy then by reading and discussing 'The World Restored.' Kissingers later book on Diplomacy pales in comparison to what is discussed in 'The World Restored.'

This is a classic, of course. Elegantly written ...

This is a classic, of course. Elegantly written, insightful, philosophically sophisticated, with a lot of insight for those who want to understand international relations. Castlereagh simply wanted to maintain a balance of power in Europe following the Napoleonic Wars in order to facilitate Britain's security. Metternich, representing an Austria that was in the center of Europe and could not simply seek a discrete balance, wanted a conservative social contract at a time when the forces of nationalism were ultimately destined to sunder the Austro-Hungarian Empire. They wanted the same thing for different reasons. Castlereagh, dealing with resistance from his own Parliament, wanted a realpolitical solution. Metternich, the ultimate practitioner of "Machtpolitik," understood nonetheless the importance of ideas and ideology. I bought and read the paperback edition of A World Restored more than thirty years ago. I bought the hardback so that I could read it again without having to physically hold the book together. A necessary read for those truly interested in international relations.

Lack of timeline

Loved the book. I have read the whole series. The characters are very good and easy to relate to. The only thing I didn't find interesting is the lack of transition from a number of paragraphs, it made the book hard to follow. I hope that this will be corrected for the next time.

Hess Makes This Story

Charlie Richard's stories are either a hit or miss with me. I enjoyed this one.

Hess is a Kodiak bear shifter and the story is mainly told from his point of view. He stands 6' at the shoulder -- No, not when standing on his hind feet but when he's on all fours. That's huge. Hess is military trained, smart, and plans out his visit like a military campaign. With his data all done he strolls into pack territory, scratching his back, ambling along, and thinking of ways to have fun. I loved his easy going character. That was well done.

Gilbert is one of a few rescued bird shifters from a lab in Russia. He and his friends live in a converted barn in pack territory. While Gilbert is the main squeeze in this tale, I never got a feel for his raven. Gilbert never has any 'attracted to shiney' moments, hording his 'pretties' or any of that stuff that are associated with ravens. Yes, I did check Wiki -- Ravens are ground horders, playful, and love aerial aerobatics. No, none of that from Gilbert and I doubt being stubborn is a raven traint. Now I realize Gilbert is busy with his flock and still recovering from decades of being in that lab. . . But still. I wanted a bit more from him, to be worthy / a good match / fun / for Hess.

Anyway, the story is cute, the relationship has a few hiccups and of course things are happening in pack territory. I'd have liked some feedback on the skirmish. I had a few questions tied up there and if page space was the problem with explaining everything, then I'd have liked less details on the flock. You know, all of their birds, personalities, and what they do in their spare time. Yeah, I felt like feathers were flying in that barn and while I appreciated the background and an idea of where the series is going, I know all those names and attributes will be given all over again in Hector and Rock's story. Just saying.

Four stars for the humor, the loveable bear in Hess and his settling down in a barn with the flock. Not quite a fox among chickens analogy, but close. By the way, I'm sure Gilbert and Hess will learn to deal with thin walls . . . - Dan's Wife

Great series

I have to say that I love this series, I've read the whole thing twice and some stories more. I definitely have favorite characters (Jared and Carson by far) and favorite stories. I also love her Loving Nip and Paranormals Love series, also read numerous times. This particular story wasn't one of the best, but was very good because her characters are always interesting. The main reason I'm writing this review is, if the author reads the reviews (and I'm hoping she does), I want her to know I would love to see a story with Borscht's and Tullion's brother Aleksei. Since Aleksei was so against his brothers having male partners, you know we have to see Aleksei find a male partner of his own!! What glorious discord and conflict that would be.

Truncated Explanations

I gave this book a poor review not because it shows little examples and applications and demands very theoretical work without much background (all of which are true), but because it does not do a good job with what it claims to be its mission: to foster a good intuition of the geometric implications. If you read the reviews of the earlier edition, "Twit" writes what this book never does. In all truth, this would be an excellent book if you could sit for two hours a day with a tutor and slowly see the big picture, as Shifrin wants. It is a book that intentionally makes things laborious. I have always seen the example section as a place to READ problems, not to DO them. Perhaps a very similar problem might follow an example, but Shifrin and Adams leave even the teaching to the reader.

As a mathematical treatise, this book is excellent; as a pedagogical device, it is unhelpful. The "big picture" is always expected to be gleaned from the exercises; other books will state it off the bat, then let the student gain a deeper appreciation through the exercises.

The authors take pride in the book's being advanced; that said, I am a good math student and am happy to work through difficult problems - but I want to be grounded in the fundamentals before I do the abstract proofs he demands. It always just hints at what should really be understood without ever explicitly communicating it.

The advanced level is excellent and should be preserved, but Shifrin and Adams MUST add more grounding exercises in the next edition, which I had to look to other books to find.

Graduate Math Student Perspective

Having taken linear algebra several years ago with a 2002 printing of Shifrin's book, I'd have to say it was a difficult text to learn by. I did well due to much rote memorization. I kept expecting that toward the semester's end all things would come together and make sense, but they never did. At the time I had a vague sense of unease by how muddy the waters seemed after the class was over, but heck - an A's an A, right? Fast forward now to graduate linear algebra. I'm using this book as a reference guide to fill in the gaps of my forgotten knowledge (since I keep all my textbooks) and realize more now than I did then how much it really lacks.

The good: The proofs are great. Even as an undergrad, I think there was only one I had to really work at to grasp the steps in logic. The blue boxes detailing important guidelines and tips are quite helpful.

The bad: The pictures aren't clear enough to give you an idea of what's going on without a better corresponding explanation in the text. (The pictures/figures may have changed in a more recent edition, but in the 2002 edition it's hard to tell what plane the different vectors are supposed to be in or coming out of due to the blue on black with no shading/shadow/light source rendering. Some were confusing enough I gave up trying to make sense of the pictures and just read the text. That's bad for a book that claims to be a geometric approach.) Even with better pictures, a little text box representing what you're supposed to be looking at and why it's important would be useful to a new student. While this is more the publisher's fault than the author's, other readers have commented and it seems to be an issue: I bought my book new and the pages fell out of the binding 2/3 of the way through the semester. I replaced the binding with a 3-ring binder.

The ugly: Somehow I managed to get through the entire linear algebra course using this book without realizing how the dimension of a subspace related to the real number space. Previous comments are right on the mark about the examples. Instead of using the examples to motivate a difficult concept, the author may give a generalization of a new topic for an mxn matrix in R^(mn) and afterward give an example of how this concept works with a 3x2 matrix you can actually work with. A student new to the material will likely miss the point of the example and have a hard time understanding the meaning of the new concept's generalization. In my opinion, it's easier to understand a concrete example and then move onto a generalization. The examples that are given are shown as computational exercises. Why they're important isn't really explained in the text. Notes in the margin detailing the steps would be helpful for a student new to the material to fill in the missing gaps.

Bottom line: You can succeed with this textbook (my rote memorization/computation approach to the class years ago worked) but you may lack in basic understanding of the concepts. If you have a good instructor or supplement with MIT's Open CourseWare lecture notes and the short lecture revision videos online, you'll be fine. However, if you would like a thorough knowledge of the material for further studies, I strongly recommend you buy another textbook to learn the material from and keep as a reference after your course. You can rent this one for a semester or get the homework problems from a classmate if you're short on cash.

Update (5/2013):
I read through the book again, side-by-side with Hoffman/Kunze for a graduate course in Advanced Linear Algebra to refresh and fill in the gaps in my knowledge. I explored the application sections, which my undergraduate instructor skipped, and was pleased with how much it added to my understanding. This time around, I noticed why things are shown in 2 or n dimensions and how that relates to what is going on in the various subspaces. Even though this was lost on me as an undergraduate because the authors never really explicitly addressed or explained it, I'm upgrading to 3 stars.

The chapters vs. section labeling was still confusing. The authors frequently referenced previous problems in the examples, and I spent a great deal of wasted time just trying to figure out where the example was. Last, calculations in the examples aren't intuitive. While I figured out the examples this time around, I remain baffled at how I managed to learn the material as an undergrad. In the last half of the book in particular, the authors often just present a basis for a space or transformation without explaining how they arrived at it. This would be fine if they had actually explicitly explained how to do the task in section xyz, but they never really did. They implied how, but let the reader figure it out on their own. While that makes for intriguing reading of leisure material in your free time, it is poor exposition for text book purportedly aimed at reaching students in a classroom setting.

In short, the book was much better the second time through, but primarily due to greater mathematical maturity I brought to the table. It is a fine book to prepare you for further work in the subject, but you should purchase a supplemental text if this will be your first foray into Linear Algebra. Hopefully the authors will introduce a second edition in the near future to address some of these issues.

a fine book telling you what the numbers mean

Again I was puzzled that such a fine book by such fine authors could receive several pans here. Looking at it again I see why. As usual it is because the book gives the reader more than some of them want, and hence expects more from them in turn.

Instead of merely exhibiting pages of sterile computations with rows of matrices and linear equations, but no visible meaning, the authors begin with a short and useful review of the geometry of vectors in the plane, including ways of computing angles via dot products. Using the ideas developed there, they expand to discuss n dimensional vector geometry, and pose the problem of describing hyperplanes in n space, i.e. copies of n-1 dimensional subspaces embedded linearly in n space. Of course these ideas are already challenging.

Why do they do this? Because this is exactly what the solutions of a linear equation in n variables represents. One equation represents one hyperplane. Hence several simultaneous equations represent the intersection of several hyperplanes. that's all folks.

The accompanying geometry reveals exactly why 2 equations in 3 variables are expected to have infinitely many solutions: it is because the two planes represented by the two equations, intersect generally along a line in 3 space. But the uncurious student who does not care what solutions of equations mean, is annoyed rather than enlightened.

This is unfortunate, but the authors are rather to be complemented for explaining not only how calculations in the subject are carried out, but what they mean geometrically, and also how they can be applied in many situations. Perhaps the deepest applications, to differential operators, occurs as well at the end of the book.

All in all a fine book for some one who wants to understand not just the numerology, but also the geometry of linear algebra, i.e. the interpretation that gives intuitive substance to all the theorems.

An excellent program book!!

I have very limited programming experience, so when I had to buy this book for a class I was prepared for the worst, but actually this class is one of my favorites this semester, and this book is the reason why. It is amazingly easy (and even fun) to read and understand, whether your experienced or have never programmed with C in your life. A++++

A cut-and-paste abomination

Here's the punchline: despite the title, this is a book about C++ as much as it is about C; moreover, there's little to no original content in this book. It largely consists of chunks of text from other books by the same authors pasted together with some minor editing, but the editing was not extensive enough and the seams show: a few sections (straight from the middle of the book) talk about the garbage collector in Java as if it were a part of C!

I just finished a course on C, and the instructor opted to use this book. My first impression of the book was that it's way too expensive and it's way too big for a friendly introduction to C. From the size alone and the ten different subheadings, I had a feeling this was going to be a prime example of what I call Textbook Syndrome, and indeed it is now my main example of this phenomenon.

Textbook Syndrome is an unfortunate disease afflicting most authors who write books used for introductory freshman and sophomore college courses. In short, Textbook Syndrome causes an author to write for the people teaching from the book, not the people learning from it. It is believed that Textbook Syndrome is contagious and is spread via the propagation of poorly understood flimsy green entities; the development of a cure and preventative measure is an open question in science today.

For diagnostic purposes, here are a few common symptoms of Textbook Syndrome, all exhibited keenly by the present book:

(i) The book includes about ten times as much material as could reasonably be covered in a one-semester course. This is done so that (a) the book is bigger and therefore both looks more substantive and costs more; (b) it can be used for any course on any topic remotely related to the book's title; (c) it can be used for both introductory courses and advanced courses. The math is simple: (a) + (b) + (c) = a blatant attempt to maximize profit, nothing else.

For the student, it means he must carry around an ancient thousand-page tome, the majority of which will never be useful to him. For the teacher, it means he must (perhaps ironically) put more effort into actually providing the course with a coherent structure, as the book itself, so overburdened with unnecessary material, could never hope to achieve any sort of coherence.

This is a book on C, as the title suggests. It's also a book on game programming. It's also a book on C++ (count them: ten chapters). I wonder if they will add another ten chapters on Java in the next edition.

(ii) Exercises range from fill-in-the-blank questions about what preprocessor directive to use to include one file in another (I am not kidding) to a team-based, multi-month extravaganza to develop a compiler from scratch. Books written by authors having Textbook Syndrome often exhibit what I will call the intermediate value property: given two extremes possessed by the book, the book will also possess everything in between.

The present book indeed has the intermediate value property. Every imaginable exercise in between the two above extremes is present at the end of each chapter. Presumably this is so the book is useable at the same time by everybody on the planet Earth from Ph.D. physicists and mathematicians at NASA to novice junior high students who aren't up to speed on the concept of "computer." (For the latter group, worry not: the first chapter will help clarify the purpose of these auspicious contraptions.)

(iii) Very important pieces of information are inexplicably missing. The standard function gets() is mentioned, but it is not mentioned that this function should almost never be used. Even the man page for gets explicitly states it should not be used, but this thousand-page tome can't even provide this nugget of actually useful information.

(iv) The book includes vocabulary lists (just words, no definitions) at the end of every chapter since, you know, memorizing vocab words is useful while one learns to program. (Technically, this is a special case of the intermediate value property discussed in point (ii), but the vocab lists are so stupid I wanted to give them the emphasis that comes with having their own point.)

I could go on, but I will conclude this review with a description of who I think must be the quintessential intended user of this book. You should buy this book if you have money to blow, you believe that copying and pasting bits of text from a dozen other books is the height of authorship, you want to support the financial decline of many poor and starving computer science students who are forced to purchase books like this, you believe vocab lists are relevant to computer science (and therefore you have absolutely no computer science education whatsoever), you don't know the meaning of the word "focus", and you have long lost any respect for titles (who are these titles to dictate the contents of books anyway?).
